The Best Gaming Crossovers

Warthog in Forza Horizon 3

With recent news that you can drive a UNSC Warthog in Forza Horizon 3, we look back on some of our favourite – and most surprising – gaming crossovers. When we sat down to make our list, we realised there were more examples than we realised – everyone has a favourite franchise or genre and could think of half a dozen examples. And not just games invading other games. We all know what happens when games invade movies (the less said about Pixels, the better) but sometimes when it goes the other way, it can be brilliant.

We’ve whittled our list down to five. Add your favourites in the comments.

Spartan-458 kicks ass in Dead or Alive 4

SPARTAN-458 Nicole, is an unlockable character in the early Xbox 360 title Dead or Alive 4 – a series famed for it’s , err… bouncy breast animation and volleyball voyeurism spin off series. Although Nicole was created as an homage to the Halo universe, the Petty Officer Second Class SPARTAN-II (the same Spartan series as John-117, Master Chief himself) is now considered canon.

Unlock Nicole-458 by completing all the story battles at least once.

Everybody who is anybody in Killer Instinct

Killer Instinct is rapidly becoming to video games what UK TV drama Casualty is to British actors. Everyone‘s been in Casualty, and it’s almost true for Killer Instinct. Rash from Battletoads? Check. Gears of War bad guy General Raam? Check. Halo‘s Arbiter? Check.

The seasonal nature of Killer Instinct, and the fighting game genre, makes for fertile cameo ground, attracting fans of other franchises to this surprisingly deep and nuanced fighter.

Minecraft Skins

Minecraft is a phenomenon, invading popular culture and the classroom in ways no-one really expected when the fashion-challenged Notch introduced the world to his blocky creation. New skins and mods for Minecraft – changing the player avatar or giving the whole world a visual makeover – only adds to the charm. Our favourites include the Master Chief skin (ooh, Halo again), and the Skyrim mod which transforms your world into a snowy, blocky province of Tamriel. Skins, like the game itself, seem unlimited. Borderlands, Star Wars, Back to the Future… the list goes on and on.

Forza Horizon 2 presents Fast & Furious

This little crossover surprised us in a number of ways – notably by being a movie marketing stunt that’s a really good game. Built on the impossibly brilliant Forza Horizon 2 engine, Forza Horizon 2 presents Fast & Furious lets you take the wheel of some of the most iconic cars from the movie franchise, including Toretto’s 1970 Dodge Charger R/T and Letty’s 2015 Dodge Challenger.

Even better – the game was free for a limited time and picking it up just now for just eight quid is well worthwhile.

Isaac Clark in Skate 3

Deadspace is a gritty science fiction horror in which protagonist Isaac Clark fights for survival, dissecting vicious, terrifying necromorphs using only an industrial cutting tool. Skate 3 has skateboards.

No, we don’t get it, either.

There you have it – some of our favourite gaming crossovers. Have you got a favourite that didn’t make the list? Let us know in the comments!

Update: An earlier version of this article referred to Necromorphs as Xenomorphs, because this writer is an idiot.
