Razer Gigantus Review

Razer Gigantus

The name normally says it all with Razer products and it’s the same with the Gigantus. Yes, it’s a mouse mat. If you’re still using a square cut from the back of a Rice Krispies packet, the Razer Gigantus makes a compelling case for upgrade.

Note: Whilst Microsoft has announced that mouse support is coming to Xbox One, it’s not here yet. We’re testing this mouse mat on PC – a platform that Xbox Play Anywhere is seeing us use more frequently.

The Gigantus is a large gaming mouse mat designed with the gamers in mind. The packaging’s a clue – as is the name – but unbox the Gigantus and you’ll still be shocked at the size of the thing. At 455mm (18″) square it’s, well, gigantic. If you play on PC, though, you’ll know the pain of running out of mousing surface mid-game. It really can be the difference between in-game life and death.

No such fears here, then. Once we’d moved two years’ worth of accumulated clutter from our desk (bobbleheads, controllers, a mug with something growing in it) we had the space to lay the Gigantus in position, its rubberised (and Razer-green) base holding firm with no slippage. Nice. It’s surprisingly heavy, too; at over 600 grams (1.4 lbs) this thing’s not going anywhere.

Immediately we noticed a difference – not just the size of the thing (which meant we had to lift and re-position the mouse – Razer’s Deathadder Elite – far less frequently) but how smooth and precise movement felt. The diagonal weave of the cloth surface makes for incredibly precise tracking and a smooth glide without ever feeling the mouse was out of control.

Control. That’s the key, and the Gigantus offers that, in spades. It might seem pricey for what’s often considered to be the least technical piece of kit in your armoury, but the Gigantus might just give you the edge you need.

The Razer Gigantus is available direct from Razer, priced £29.99.

Razer supplied the Razer Gigantus for the purpose of this review. It was tested for more than thirty hours with a variety of applications and a range of different mice. (Mouses? Mice? Mice.)
