Razer DeathAdder Elite Review

Razer DeathAdder Elite

If you’re prodding around the seedier corners of the internet, populating spread sheets or writing a letter to Auntie Maude in Canada, a mouse is a mouse is a mouse. If you’re engaging in Overwatch, League of Legends or World of Warcraft on PC, the right mouse is most certainly not just any old mouse.

Enter the Razer Deathadder Elite, an eSports gaming mouse that boasts a resolution of 16,000 DPI and a tracking speed of 450 inches per second. But whatever those numbers mean, how does this mouse perform?

Note: Whilst Microsoft has announced that mouse support is coming to Xbox One, it’s not here yet. We’re testing this mouse on PC – a platform that Xbox Play Anywhere is seeing us use more frequently.

The DeathAdder Elite is a slightly revised version of the classic DeathAdder, a mouse that’s been around for a while and has a significant fan base. Eschewing anything weird and fanciful, the DeathAdder is the classic curved mouse shape, with two buttons up front, and a scroll wheel in the middle. With two buttons on the right hand side just where your thumb rests (this is a right handed mouse) and two small buttons behind the scroll wheel to adjust sensitivity, there’s all the functionality you’ll need right at your fingertips.

Aesthetically, the DeathAdder fits with Razer’s other products. That is, it’s black. Colour comes from Razer’s Chroma lighting system – the Razer logo on the rear of the mouse and the edge of the scroll wheel LED-lit in any of thousands of colours. Not that you’ll notice in use – your hand will cover the light almost entirely.

The DeathAdder Elite connects to your PC via a generous 7-foot braided (thankfully!) wire that’s both tough and flexible. (If you’re wondering, eSports professionals prefer wired over wireless for avoidance of lag and reliability) and we had not tangling issues with the cable.

In fact, we had no issues whatsoever with the DeathAdder Elite – it performed flawlessly throughout testing. We’re always wary of thumb-buttons, which are often to easy to press or bump accidentally. Here, the thumb buttons are placed just perfectly, activate with a satisfyingly firm click, and are placed high enough in the arc of the mouse – just above the thumb-grip – to avoid accidental bumps. Click action on all of the buttons is super-speedy, so nothing will get in the way of rapid fire presses.

As expected, all of the buttons can be reprogrammed using the Razer Synapse software package, and Synapse supports automatic profile switching based on the game you’re playing, so you’ll always have the right actions tied to the right buttons. Synapse is also used to tune the resolution of the DeathAdder, so if you want to drop that DPI right down for super accurate sniping, go right ahead! If you do, you’ll need a larger than usual mouse mat (may we suggest the Razer Gigantus).

The DeathAdder Elite just feels right in our hands. It’s not to heavy, not too complicated, endlessly reliable, and perfectly customisable. We love it.

The Razer DeathAdder Elite is available direct from Razer, priced £69.99.

Razer supplied the Razer DeathAdder Elite for the purpose of this review. It was tested for more than thirty hours with a variety of applications and games.
