The Witcher 3: Is This The End?
Ok so nobody panic but it looks like the Blood and Wine Expansion, due out one the 31st of May, could be the end of The Witcher as we know it.
That certainly would seem to be the case if you were to listen to Marcin Iwinski. The CD Projekt Red co-founder said the studio doesn’t have any plans for The Witcher after the Blood and Wine expansion hits at the end of the month. Iwinski said this when asked about the future of the franchise:
As we said before, never say never [but] right now it’s really Blood and Wine. This the end,” said Iwinski. “Blood and Wine is [the] closing and there won’t be any Witcher any time soon – if there ever will be one.
Whilst it may seem unlikely that the developer won’t return to what is an incredibly successful game universe there is one thing we need to remember. The studio are working on their next title Cyberpunk 2077.
Why should this game be taken into consideration when thinking about the future of The Witcher? Well Cyberpunk 2077 was announced way back in May of 2012, and as of May 2016 (a substantial four years later) the title is only in the EARLY stages of it’s development. This makes it difficult to imagine a new Witcher game any time soon with an ambitious game such as 2077 only it’s infancy.
Would a studio with a relatively low head count (around the 250 mark) really be able to develop and deliver two outstanding AAA games at the same time? It appears that’s a risk the Polish developer aren’t willing to take and they’d much rather focus all their efforts on one game at a time.
Could we see CD Projekt Red adopt a Rockstar style approach to their games? Not confirming if there are any plans for future games or indeed the franchise until the game is all but complete and ready to be released to the public.
Only time will tell if this is the case, however all is not lost as there’s going to be plenty more for you to do in The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt soon enough with the massive Blood & Wine Expansion.
Just in case you hadn’t seen it here is the latest Blood & Wine trailer in all it’s glory:
So what are your thoughts? Are CD Projekt Red truly done with The Witcher franchise? Will we see the rights sold to another studio for third party development? Or is there a huge plan laid out for the series that is being kept an iron-clad secret?
Only time will tell what is actually to become of The Witcher, however, feel free to let us know your thoughts. Whether those thoughts are hopes for the future or fears of losing what has become a hugely successful franchise in a very short amount of time. Drop us a comment below!
