Battleborn Free To Play?
When Battleborn released earlier this year we found a game that was a pleasant mix of various genres. Whilst having a steep learning curve it was still fun to play with a different and interesting style.
Unfortunately, it soon fell out of favour with many gamers. This was no doubt due to it being released so close to the release of FPS juggernaut Overwatch. The games are very different but the popularity of Overwatch definitely hurt a lot of Battleborn’s player base. That being said, the game still has a loyal fan base with many players feeling that by moving the game to free to play it would bring in a larger player base.
Gearbox studios, in released statements, seem to be against this move. However, Kotaku has cited an insider source as saying that a free to play version is on its way. This leak was soon brought to the attention of Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford, who was quick to address the news. In a tweet, he stated
“I was just told about a reckless story about Battleborn going F2P that is false. There are no plans to convert Battleborn free to play.”
This on the face of it looks like a blatant denial of any free to play version of Battleborn and confirmation that the insider reports were false. But Randy soon followed the tweet up saying
“We have some unannounced plans to do a trial version of the game that would be free and from which retail can be purchased along with DLC.”
Pitchford then confronted Kotaku and denied that the free trial he had previously mentioned would be a timed demo. This, therefore, sounds to us like there will be some form of Battleborn that will be free to play in the future. It is clear to see why Gearbox isn’t in the mood to be talking about this yet, as many people potentially looking at purchasing Battleborn may now hold off and wait for the free version instead of paying full price at retail.
So will we see Battleborn go fully free to play? We will have to wait and see, but it certainly seems like something is coming our way from Gearbox in the near future.
