Gamer Habits….. Excuses Excuses

Recently I wrote an article about that small phenomenon we all know as gamer rage. There is something else that goes hand in hand with gamer rage and that is excuses. We all use them, there is always a reason why we lost and it is never our fault. We all have our go to excuse and some are more imaginative than others.

Over the past couple of days, like many people, I have been playing a bit of Black Ops 3. Call Of Duty is a game that I have loved for several years but I am still terrible at it. This means that I have a whole host of excuses for my poor performance because obviously it is never down to my lack of ability.

One of the most common excuses that many of us use is lag. Now, we all know that lag is a real thing that can strike at anytime. But if we’re honest, we’ve all used it as an excuse at some point or other. This is something of a multiplayer phenomenon, especially when playing over Xbox Live. It is a pretty handy excuse in these circumstances as no one can know for sure whether you did actually lag or not.excuses1

One of my personal favorite reasons for under performing is controller buttons sticking. We’ve all experienced this for real at some point, especially with older controllers but I use this excuse far more often than is necessary. I am sure that my friends believe I must treat my controllers most awfully and can’t be trusted with anything more technical than a stick and ball.

Talking of my friends, one person I know who shall forever remain nameless (you know who you are) consistently blames his under performance on his dog. The amount of times his dog has walked in front of his screen or jumped on him at that crucial moment is truly amazing. I am sure that my friend is not the only person that does this and these wayward pets should really be locked in another room, or better still, taken for a long walk before any gaming session.

There is an excuse that I get to use very rarely. It is when you finish top of your teams leaderboard but yet your team still lose. At this point you are in the unique position of been able to blame the rest of your team. Obviously it can’t be your fault, you finished top, you carried the rest of them and without you they would have done even worse. Sometimes this will be true but more often than not you were all as bad as each other and you just got a little bit more luck than anyone else.excuses3

In the run up to the launch of Black Ops 3 I was reminiscing about the time I spent playing Treyarchs predecessor to it, Black Ops 2. When I was playing Black Ops 2 regularly one excuse used to come out of my mouth almost as much as the claim that I was lagging. That was the accusation that at least some of the other players in the server were hackers. Occasionally this was true, I remember playing one game and players were falling in front of me for apparently no reason what so ever. We were the victim of an invisible knife-man. This was fairly rare though but it didn’t stop me accusing anyone who was better than me (nearly everyone) of been a hacker.

When friends are together in the same room playing games the excuses change slightly. One of our favorites is apathy. How many times have we heard someone say “oh I wasn’t really trying, it’s just a bit of fun isn’t it”? Usually, if you had looked at their faces while they were playing, then it would betray how they really felt about the game and how hard they were really trying.

Finally there is the outright accusation. This normally occurs when playing team or co-op games with friends. You would have won if so-and-so hadn’t betrayed you. Their betrayal can take many forms, from not trying hard enough, not been good enough or to their desire to take all of the glory for themselves. We all know that one person who will try and go it alone in Fifa rather than passing to you when you have an open goal to shoot in or the player who takes all of the spare ammo only to waste the bullets by carelessly shooting them into walls.excuses4

These are some of mine and my friends excuses anyway. What are yours? Let us know in the comments section what your go to thing to blame is when it all goes horribly wrong.
