Christmas Gift Guide | Gifts £50 – £100

Christmas

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, and many a gamer’s thoughts turn to the gadgets they’d like to find under the tree on Happy Santa Day. But if you are spoiled for choice, or looking for that something special for the gamer in your life, don’t worry. We got you, fam.

We’ve picked out some of our favourite gaming gadgets that we’ve tested this year – and some things we’d like for ourselves! – and grouped them together by price so you’re sure to find some gift inspiration here.

Part Two| Mid range gifts

If you’re spending over £50, you’ll start to have some expectations about quality. Headsets will start to offer something unique and lose that ‘plasticky’ finish, while controllers will offer features not found at a lower price point.

Starting with a niche product, this one won’t appeal to everyone – but for the right person, this gift could make their Christmas. The Turtle Beach Stream Mic is a lovely bit of kit for the YouTube or Streamer in your life. Renowned audio experts that they are, Turtle Beach have diversified their catalogue once again – the Stream Mic is the first product of its kind from the San Diego headquartered company.

In testing we awarded the Stream Mic an impressive 4.5 stars and loved it for its ease of use and build quality – not to mention the stunning retro-inspired looks. Grab it for £80.

“Overall the Turtle Beach Stream Mic is truly fantastic. If you ask any successful streamer for advice, one thing they’ll tell you is invest in a quality microphone. Well, look no further.”

Keeping with the audio theme, we were hugely impressed with the LucidSound LS20 headset. This is the second product from upstarts LucidSound who already have a reputation for combining great design with audio fidelity.

Awarding the LS20 headset a whopping 4.5 stars, you can grab a set from Argos for just £80 – a brilliant price for the best headset of its type (we think). We love it for its non-gamer looks and brilliant controls.

LucidSound LS20

“Sound quality can’t be faulted – in fact, given that the source is compressed stereo audio, sound quality is remarkably close to that delivered by the more expensive LS30. We’d go as far as saying this is one of the very best stereo headsets of this type, and certainly the best in this price bracket.”

If the understated elegance of the LS20 is a little too sedate for you, may we respectfully suggest you try out the HyperX CloudX Revolver. We tested the Gears of War special edition, but the regular set offers the same light weight, great comfort and excellent Stereo sound, for £40 less. We gave the Gears version 4 stars, and you can pick up a standard set for £80.

“The HyperX CloudX Revolver Gears of War is lightweight and comfortable for most, with solid stereo sound. The looks won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but if you’re a Gears fan and in the market for a solid, lightweight stereo headset, you should definitely add this one to your list.”

We were delighted to find that the Razer Wildcat controller can now be found for a smidge under £100, bringing this excellent controller into this price range. Now available for £99, we loved the Wildcat for its light weight, comfy palm grips, on board audio controls and amazing thumbsticks, awarding it 4 Stars.

“The Razer Wildcat is an impressive eSports pad that separates itself from the Elite controller through an exceptionally lightweight (wired only) design and on-board audio controls. If you are in the market for a high-end controller, we definitely recommend you give it a test drive.”

And while we’re looking at Razer, let’s not forger their PC-only Razer Kraken 7.1 v2 headset. With more and more games featuring Play Anywhere, more of us are using our PCs to play and – just as with console gaming – a good headset’s a must. And as far as PC headset’s go, the Razer Kraken 7.1 is just about the best we’ve tested. A whopping 4.5 stars for this £99.99 cracker.

“Yes, yes, yes. We explained all this. Cool your jets. This is a PC headset that’s not compatible with Xbox One. But, you know what? Through Xbox Live and Play Anywhere, Xbox is as much a service as a console, and if you play at all on your PC, you’ll need a good head set. Don’t bother with wireless for a PC headset. Don’t even shop around. Buy this one. The Razer Kraken 7.1 V2 is just that good.”

There you go – a handful of gift ideas in the £50 – £100 range to give you some food for thought.
