Black and White Bushido Review

Not Quite Bushido Blade

Black and White Bushido is a 4 player 2-D platforming “stealth ‘em up”, according to the developers Good Catch, which is the most accurate description for B&WB. Other suggestions from us include “4 player dash ‘n’ slash”, and “one screen of monochrome mutilation”… Perhaps “stealth ‘em up” is better.

You control a warrior of light or shadow, hiding in specific sections of the map waiting to strike. These sections will change every so often to ensure no players camp in the same spot for the whole game.

The game itself is a single screen 2-D platformer with wall jumps, double jumps and more slashes than a Guns ‘n’ Roses tribute night. Players can run around the levels like a headless chicken, slicing anyone who crosses their path, but it’s much more rewarding to play hide and seek, attacking when your opponent least expects it.

Black and White Bushido is at its most tense with four players on the same screen fighting for superiority. With the drinks flowing and obscenities flying, B&WB is a fantastic addition to any gaming party, and with its simple controls, anyone can have a go. There is also an online mode, if you wish to take that bravado worldwide, but it was unavailable at the time of writing.

The issue is that there are not enough modes, with only deathmatch and a capture the point mode to entertain players. There is a third “Challenge” mode for those lonesome players, but it essentially amounts to a horde mode with awful bots. Seriously, the bots in this game are atrocious. Stick to human players.

Black and White Bushido ultimately offers great gameplay, but unfortunately doesn’t provide enough range of content to keep players engaged beyond a few short bursts. It’s a fantastic party game, but parties do end. Some quicker than others.

Black and White Bushido is available now on the Xbox Store for £10.39. Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
