Inside every Xbox One lurks Windows 10 – Microsoft’s all-encompassing operating system that supports the Universal Windows Platform. This means – in theory – any app that uses UWP can run on any Windows 10 device, be it PC, laptop, tablet, phone, or Xbox One. We’ve picked out a few of our favourites. VideoLAN VideoLan – or VLC – is one of the most fully featured video players around, with a support for a wide range of file formats and a whole host of tricks – like electronically boosting volume beyond 100%, useful when that atmospheric soundtrack is just a little … Read More »

We love our classic consoles. Games from a bygone era – classic, simple, hard as nails. So when we get the merest sniff that we might be able to play some of these classics through the wonders of emulation, we sit up and take notice. Undoubtedly, we’re going to see emulators on our Xbox Ones sooner rather than later, thanks to Universal Windows Platform (UWP) and the convergence of the Windows 10 and Xbox stores. We recently brought you the news that Win64e10 – a Nintendo 64 emulator App that runs reasonably happily on Windows 10 – could potentially see the light … Read More »

Yesterday Director of Program Management for Xbox, Mike Ybarra, confirmed that Xbox One users can soon expect to see the functionality to develop their own UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps for their consoles. The confirmation came in the form of one of the modern ages preferred forms of communication, Twitter, the below Tweet contains the initial statement: BTW, you will soon be able to create and publish your own UWP apps on Xbox One. I’d love to see the background music apps you come up with! — ♏️ike Ybarra (@XboxQwik) 3 August 2016 The reason I worded it as “initial … Read More »

Universal Windows Apps are coming to Xbox as part of the summer update programme, which – alongside the Windows 10 Anniversary Update – will bring a whole host of new features to Xbox One. The Windows 10 Store hasn’t – yet – succumbed to the tidal wave of shoddy and fake apps that you might find in, for example, another company’s Play store but there are certainly a few oddities that you might be surprised to find in a Microsoft-curated store front. One of these is Win64e10 – a Nintendo 64 emulator that runs on Windows 10 PCs. Of course, the whole area … Read More »

If you’ve bought heavily into the Windows 10 ecosystem, this latest change might give you brief pause. Xbox One consoles now count towards your Windows 10 device limit. You can install any Apps or Games you purchase from the Windows 10 store on up to 10 devices – and with the availability of Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps on Xbox One, that device limit will now include your Xbox One console. This might be a problem for some – in fact I thought I would be close to the limit, with one Windows 10 desktop PC, three Windows 10 laptops, … Read More »

It appears a new preview version of Skype is now available in the Microsoft app store.  This was first discovered on Reddit by user LeftTheUndead but there has been no additional information in regards to changes.  It does seem that Skype will be another app to join the ranks as a universal app between Windows 10 and Xbox One for the Universal Windows Platform (UWP).  Currently though the app doesn’t appear to work on the Xbox One but may be there as a test program for Microsoft’s UWP.  Check out the screen shot below of the Xbox One dashboard: Do you … Read More »

The guys up at Microsoft HQ must’ve sat around the boardroom table at some point and just said, ‘You know what, why can’t everyone get along?’ And so Microsoft’s harmonious ‘Windows Family’ approach was born. Probably. We’ve seen it with the ability to stream from console to PC, and the total obliteration of the Kinect-inspired Xbox dashboard (Kin-what?), which was replaced with a Windows 10-style UI. By this point, the romance between Xbox and Windows 10 is somewhere around third base; on their way but not quite there. But now Jason Ronald, Xbox Product Manager, has confirmed that the two … Read More »

Let’s not beat around the bush – Universal Windows Apps on Xbox One are a BIG DEAL. Yes, even if you are a gamer who only uses the Xbox to play games and refuses to even look at an App – and if that’s who you are, then I’m glad you have read even this far. Please, read on. It’s worth it, trust me. First, a little background. Inside your Xbox One there beats a Windows 10 heart. It’s not the only heart in there, but it’s probably the one that will beat most significantly in the console’s future. Windows … Read More »
