We’re only on our third mission when we realise we’re in trouble. Our dogged insistence on relying on the tactics that served us so well in 2012’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown / Enemy Within has led us to this place, and our beleaguered resistance fighters are unlikely to get out of this one alive. Farewell, brave pawns. Your time was all too brief. XCOM 2 – eschewing any other moniker for the first time in this laser-squad-inspired franchise’s 22 years – takes the 2012 reboot and improves upon it in every way. It’s tougher, more brutal, deeper, more involving, better looking and more … Read More »

Today has seen quite a lot of information released onto the world wide web regarding the development status of Halo Wars 2. The update came from Dan Ayoub, Studio Head of Strategy Games, 343 Industries. In a post on the official Halo Waypoint website Ayoub stressed that the studio have been working hard to rectify and fine tune some of the issues brought to their attention during the BETA stage a couple of months ago. One of the biggest problems the game faced during its BETA stage was the plague of connectivity and de-synch issues. The Head of Strategy Games at 343 … Read More »

War. War never changes. That’s even true when you’re talking about Risk: Urban Assault. It may look very different to the board game it’s based upon, with its Modern Warfare-esque twist. And you can see why developers Zoe Mode and Ubisoft have taken this approach, since guns, tanks and explosions makes Risk: Urban Assault that much more marketable to gamers raised on military shooters. But at its heart, like the original board game, it’s still just a turn-based strategy game. That’s a blessing and a curse. Set in a post-apocalyptic world at war, you’ll take control of one of three factions … Read More »

Cannon Brawl melds the tactical warfare and destructible terrain of Worms with the twitch reactions required of a Call of Duty style shooter.  There’s lots to see and do and Cannon Brawl is certainly a fun action game – especially in multiplayer – but it struggles to deliver on its promise of an engaging battle of wits. Originally a PC title released in 2013, Cannon Brawl is a 2D real-time strategy game that pits players against AI and human opponents, both local and online.  You command your base from a mobile airship that you move around the map, building offensive and defensive units to … Read More »

Thinking. Let’s be honest – it’s not everyone’s strong suit. You, though. You look like an intelligent, thoughtful person (unless you are, you know, the presumptive Republican nominee) and I just bet you love a bit of strategic thinking. We do, too. So here are five quite brilliant Xbox One strategy games that’ll work the old grey matter more than the trigger finger. 5. The Living Dungeon There’s something comforting about a board game. Whether it’s harking back to a childhood we never fully embraced, a yearning for simpler times, or just an excuse to hang out with friends, board … Read More »

The brand new trailer for the Jekyll and Hyde-esque Vampyr has leaked a few days ahead of its official release at E3, showcasing gameplay and gore. Coming from Dontnod Entertainment – the developer behind choice-based time-bender Life is Strange – Vampyr looks set to force similarly challenging player choices: who will you kill next? In the new trailer we see protagonist Jonathan E. Reid giving us the bleak lowdown on a gloomy – but not dreary – London, which has become racked with disease and corruption. Reid himself, a WWI doctor who has been transformed into a vampire, must sustain … Read More »

Tropico 5 Penultimate Edition marks the Xbox One debut for this zany strategy franchise. For the uninitiated, Tropico is a city-builder that rewards a slightly more dictatorial approach than your average Sim City. Always stylish and always fun, Tropico games have traditionally been light on the strategy. This time, though, developer Haemimont Games has changed the focus. Tropico 5 is tough., is that it’s tough. It’s really tough. How tough can it be? We’ll tell you. We failed the tutorial, bested by politics in the very mode that’s supposed to reach us how to play. However, in failure there were lessons to … Read More »
