Pillars of Eternity is a game that is a bit of a culture shock when you first start to play it. Being a port of a PC game, it is something a little different from what we are used to as far as RPG's go on consoles. The games that we seem to use as a benchmark for the genre are the Elder Scrolls and Witchers of the world. Pillars of Eternity is nothing like these games and it is all the better for it. The character creation mechanism in the game is deep and involving, so much so that ... Read More »
If you're old enough to remember the Amiga classic Pipe Mania, SwapQuest may seem somewhat familiar to you. However, developers Rebusmind have gone with an unusual twist on the puzzler and turned it into an RPG, but does this unique blend of genres connect as well as it should? You play as one of two protagonists, Wilma or Wilbert set in the land of Aventana and it is down to these two unlikely heroes to save the kingdom from an unknown force. There is a little 16-bit style introduction to the story at the beginning of the game, but after ... Read More »
Capcom have announced that their upcoming re-release of the fantasy RPG Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will be available on Xbox One from October 3rd. The game first launched back in 2012 on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 to generally positive reviews. Its Pawn system was quite interesting, as you made a second character who would both serve as an additional party member and could be loaned out to other players, earning experience and the like on their travels. This re-release will consist of the same content as the Dark Arisen PC port from last year, which included the base ... Read More »
Dutch developers Triangle Studios try their hand at a musically-themed Action-RPG title, taking elements of Diablo and conducting their own variation in a world where musical instruments are powerful weapons operated by unique musicians, but how well has AereA been orchestrated? To start with, it is noted that this title does not feature any introduction to the history of the world and you're dropped smack down in the middle of the beginning of a crisis, of which you will slowly learn. Your first mission: should you choose to accept it, is to visit the Great Maestro Guido, who will eventually ... Read More »
Obsidian Entertainment and Paradox Interactive have announced that their award-winning RPG Pillars of Eternity will be coming to the Xbox One on August 29th. Funded largely by 70 thousand backers and developed with games like Baldur's Gate in mind, the game takes place in the world of Eora, with your character experiencing an awakening of power that allows you to see past lives. Also, people are Hollowborn and being born without souls, and you should really figure out what is the deal with that. Pillars of Eternity has been nominated for and won a number of Best Game/RPG awards since ... Read More »
Portal Knights is one of those games that comes along every now and then and tries to steal the crown from the ultimate sandbox game, Minecraft, whilst taking pointers from Terraria. There isn't much of a story here except for the fact that a 'fracture' had arrived to the world, creating portals between all the islands in the world, and it's up to you, whoever you may be, to travelling to and fro, completing quests and choosing one of these islands to call "home". As much as this is sandbox adventure title, it also focuses heavily on RPG elements to ... Read More »
From developers 10tons; who brought you many puzzle games such as Tennis in the Face and Sparkle, comes Spellspire, a genius (word worth a measly 7 points in Scrabble) mix of RPG and a word game. The game instantly throws you into the action (if you could call it that), with the first level outlining the basics of the game. It's rather quite simple: Make words of three letters or more from the ten available letters in order to eliminate the enemies that are slowly heading towards you, and reach the chest at the end of the level. However, the ... Read More »
Genre combinations are gleaming in abundance with Rogue Stormers. Blending together action, platforming, twin stick shooter, rpg and roguelike elements in a huge mixer. It’s a bit like trying to create a new dish, but have developers Black Forest Games got the right mixture of ingredients to make this a standout title? Roguelike, is classed as a sub-genre of the fabled RPG, which involves levels being randomly generated. And that’s exactly what you’ll get from the seven main levels featured in the game. Each run through offers a different layout to test your wits against a slew of enemies. As ... Read More »
As you may be able to tell from the title, this isn't a HD remaster. This isn't a 'definitive' edition either. It is its own game, well deserved within it's own right, that it modestly has the exact same title as the original. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap is a 2D Platformer/ RPG hybrid game, reworked from the ground up, from the original title in the very late eighties. Every single facet of this title has completely been redesigned and recreated in a gorgeous cartoon style, with vibrant colours and pretty scenery: Think of the original as a sketch ... Read More »
