Who hasn’t ever wanted to be a ninja?  Having the skills in combat as well as the grace needed to move about without ever being seen – that would be amazing. Kyurinaga’s Revenge is a 2D platformer that allows you to take the role of one two ninja warriors in a pursuit to top an evil warlord.  While it is a true-to-form platformer, it doesn’t quite offer the full-on ninja experience.  At least not without limitations. In Kyurinaga’s Revenge you play as Kaoru and Broccoli – one is an onion and the other is well… broccoli.  Kyurinaga’s war machine took a decisive blow right after … Read More »

Sonic Mania’s seriously sweet collector’s edition package was previous an exclusive for North American gamers – but now it seems that players in Europe will also be able to get their Sonic-like gloved paws on this collection. The game itself, a side-scrolling platformer , is being billed a return to Sonic’s Mega Drive roots, from the art style and gameplay to the inclusion of ‘remixed’ levels from previous Sonic titles. Developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games, Sonic Mania may be the shot in the arm that the series needs – something publisher Sega must be hoping for, after a string … Read More »

Have you ever played a game where you set some sort of stipulation on a second play through, either to increase the difficulty or make the game feel different?  Surely you’ve heard of players speed running a game. Maybe play the game blindfolded. Or play two players with one controller.  Binaries takes the concept of this last and subtly twists it into a quite brilliant core mechanic.  Developed by Scottish outfit Ant Workshop, Binaries is a puzzle platformer that embodies simplicity while creating a fun and addictive experience. Looking like it was developed in the world of Tron, Binaries is a very simple … Read More »

Metacritic has always acted as a generally fair barometer for how people feel about games – and it turns out that recent release Inside is almost universally beloved. According to Xbox’s head of marketing, Aaron Greenberg, the game, from developer Playdead, immediately went in at the top spot as the highest-rated Xbox One game to be released this year. We always knew that Inside was a special game – check out our review – but the dark and gritty platform adventure has performed even better than we expected, beating off some triple-A competition from Overwatch, Doom and Xbox-exclusive Ori and … Read More »

Published and Developed by Pixel Lantern, Bard’s Gold is a slow-paced yet extremely challenging retro-styled 2D platformer, with both rogue-like and RPG elements. That’s quite a collection of genres, but do they mesh well? We’ll dispense with the plot quickly, as it’s entirely inconsequential. Our protagonist – the titular Bard – has had his gold stolen by a Goblin who subsequently escaped to a sinister world, as Goblins often do. You must help the Bard get his gold back (it’s not a highly-paid profession, after all) by exploring strange lands and defeating tough enemies. Even though the game is a retro style 2D … Read More »
