Open world games are as common now as the 3D platformer was in the late 90’s. It’s become almost the standard model with certain titles setting the benchmark on how to achieve success within your sandbox surroundings. And for the first time, Ubisoft have brought the Ghost Recon series in to possibly one of the most vast, open spaces you can currently experience. But creating a free roaming area does not automatically mean a game will be a success. It’s the story, tools you are equipped with and opportunities that present themselves which ultimately pave the way for a standout title. ... Read More »
That Watch Dogs 2 got made at all still raises an eyebrow. That it's such a great game - overcoming all its predecessor's many flaws - is even more surprising. But we can't help wonder if the incredible hype and subsequent disappointment of the first game has hurt sales of the sequel. After all, once bitten, twice shy. What better way, then, to tempt doubters back to the franchise than by offering a free trial? Ubisoft agrees, it seems. According to the official Ubisoft blog, a free three-hour trial of the full game will be available for download starting 24th January 2017. ... Read More »
Since the tease by Rockstar on Twitter yesterday, another source has come under fire from Reddit users to quash their rumour that showed a URL link in HTML code. Apparantly, the user in question just 'inspected' an element from a webpage and altered it to show Red Dead Retribution and has absolutely nothing to do with Rockstar. Only time will confirm, as an official announcement draws closer Do you think Retribution will be the final name or will it be something completely different? Judging by previous iterations, they've began with the letter 'R', so Retribution may not be that far ... Read More »
Mafia 3 was released just a few days ago – but that hasn’t stopped it becoming the best-selling game in the series. The third instalment of the open-world gangster trilogy had a rocky start in the run up to release, with choppy frame-rates on the PC and not nearly as much buzz as publisher 2K would’ve liked, despite a heavy marketing push. But you can’t keep a good gangster down, and Mafia 3 has managed to beat Mafia 2’s week one sales record by a staggering 58.7%. However good those figures are – and developers Hangar 13 will be happy ... Read More »
There's something demonically old-school hidden in the beautiful open world island on which Jonathan Blow's The Witness is set. Despite the first person perspective, the lushly rendered island, the enticing soundtrack and all the current gen trappings on show, this is one puzzle game that will have you scrawling notes, drawing maps, and whipping out your phone to grab a screen shot as a visual reminder. But you'd never think that from the game's opening - a series of simple puzzles that together at the very definition of lulling into a false sense of security. As you take those early first steps ... Happy 10th birthday Saints Row. The third-person action game has been offering players murderous madcappery and decidedly dodgy soundtracks for a decade– and it looks like developer Volition will be celebrating the series’ anniversary in style. Back in 1999, Outcast was a rare gem - an open-world Sci-Fi RPG that featured the  beautiful alien world of Adelpha and an intriguing cast of characters. Ahead of its time, the PC-only game garnered critical and commercial success, but a follow up title never materialised. Its original creators reacquired the licence from publisher Atari in 2013 and launched an HD version on Steam. Now, despite a failed kickstarter campaign, a remake of the original is heading to consoles in 2017.
