Every now and then, an indie game comes along that takes a well-loved, well-worn genre and adds a dash of creative thinking. That’s precisely what Color Symphony 2, from one-man studio Remimory, manages to do. The result is a satisfyingly tricky game that’s part platformer, part rhythm game. Platform games are one of the best represented (read: oversaturated) genres on the market – and that’s especially true with indie titles. Color Symphony 2 attempts to stand out from a crowded market in a distinctly visual way: colour as a game mechanic. Not too much colour, mind; this isn’t Ocarina of … Read More »

Gear Gauntlet, the indie game from Drop Dead Interactive, is possibly one of the simplest games we’ve ever seen here at Xbox One UK. Simple in set-up, that is. In terms of gameplay, it’s one of the most infuriating, frustrating, anger-inducing, joy-defying games we’ve ever played. But then, that’s precisely what it’s supposed to be. It’s been showcased at Rezzed two years running, as part of the ID@Xbox line-up, where it’s received incredibly positive reactions, but a brief spell at a games convention can’t possibly do justice to it; it’s a game to be mastered, not played. The team behind … Read More »

Peripheral-based rhythm games have been suffering from lackluster sales as of late, and much like Rock Band 4 the new Guitar Hero Live is no exception. Last night Activision said that Guitar Hero Live, which released in October of 2015 against its competitor Rock Band 4, suffered from sales much lower than the publisher was expecting. This doesn’t mean that Rock Band 4 did any better, however. Quit the contrary in fact as the publisher Mad Catz ended up axing 37 percent of their staff after Rock Band 4’s “sell-through was lower than originally forecast,” and this resulted in “higher … Read More »

Earlier this year, rumours were beginning to surface on the web regarding a possible revival for the music rhythm game Rock Band.  At the time, I tweeted Harmonix to ask if they could confirm the rumours, and would we see an official announcement at this year’s GDC. The reply was simply, “What does your heart tell you?” Shortly after in early March, Harmonix confirmed that Rock Band 4 was indeed well into production, and would appear later this year on Xbox One and PS4. The announcement also revealed some unexpected, but not entirely surprising details. Full support for all previously purchased … Read More »

Music games could be coming back in a big way; multiple reports claim that both the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises are set to return to consoles after a rather lengthy absence. According to Kotaku, a new Guitar Hero game for PS4 and Xbox One could be announced at E3 in June, and the report claims that the game may bring a more realistic style to the typically cartoony series. Meanwhile, last week Bloomberg reported that a revival of the Rock Band series was in the works, also for the Xbox One and PS4. No details on the game itself were revealed, however, including when it may be officially announced. The news … Read More »
