Bungie this past weekend put out a ton of information about their newest event for the Destiny called The Dawning.  The great thing is this isn’t just some simple event and is almost on par with what was provided last April in a major update.  Now that the weekend is done, let’s recap everything we know guardians can expect on December 13th.

As mentioned The Dawning begins on December 13th and goes until January 3rd.  Don;t worry though because there is a ton of things that will remain part of everyday life.

First is what we all knew was coming – Sparrow Racing League (SRL).  The return of SRL was to be expected and has been mentioned by Bungie on more than one occasion.  The two maps that racers tested their skill on last year will return as well as two new tracks: Shining Sands and Haakon Precipice.  Shining sands is based on Mercury and Haakon Precipice is in the snow covered Cosmodrome.  You will need to own Rise of Iron to race on the two new tracks.

With racing comes new race gear.  This gear will be light level efficient so you can infuse them up to light level 400.  They also have two separate ornaments slots.  The ornaments aren’t anything crazy but give some customization.  Along with the new armor pieces there are new sparrows to earn as well.  After The Dawning event is over, SRL will be available in private matches as a permanent fixture.  The SRL racing record book is back and it appears that this will be free for everyone unlike last year which is very welcomed.  The book works the same as the Rise of Iron book with challenges in both racing and strike scoring.

Speaking of strike scoring, there is a change to the way to play strikes.  Strike scoring is a new feature that gives you a score based on performance of a particular strike you are completing a la Challenge of Elders.  There hasn’t been a report of a global leaderboard but this will give some replay value for the strikes beside exotic farming.  With the changes to strikes, some strikes are also getting the SIVA treatment.  The Will of Crota (Ominigul) and The Shadow Thief (Taniks) are currently in the SIVA playlists but will be getting SIVA variations.

The Nexus strike though is now being added to the playlist and will be given what appears to be a Taken variant.  What makes this even more exciting is the trailer shows the boss fight now using a Vex shield relic to break the boss’ shield like in the Templar fight in the Vault of Glass raid.  It’s great to see that they are changing the way that these strikes were played to give a new feel.  Also it appears that the nightfall will be given by Commander Zavala in the form of a bounty or quest.

With new things to do comes new loot.  There will be new armor and exotic weapons to be had.  The famed year 1 sniper rifle Icebreaker is returning for year 3 use.  Icebreaker will also have 2 ornaments to give it some up to date style.  The first ornament is Dunemaker which is a traditional style camo skin and Nanohance which is an all white with subtle accents.  Destiny community manager Deej commented on Twitter on how to get Icebreaker.

With Icebreakers return, we are getting two new heavy machine guns.  Back when the trailer for The Taken King first released, we saw a solar elemental “Thunderlord” machine gun.  This gun is named Abbadon and it is a solar elemental heavy machine gun with the same perks as Thunderlord where the longer you hold the trigger, the faster it shoots and it becomes more accurate.  There is also a void version as well known as Nova Mortis.  Some of the new armor sets outside of the racing gear will have new styles of ornaments.  According the to Destiny Twitter page, these new ornaments can be obtained through “Treasures of the Dawning.”

These look really neat and have a style somewhat like the Trials of Osiris ornaments.

Bungie tweeted out through the Destiny Twitter page that players can expect “gifts” from the citizens in the tower.  What these gifts will be we don’t know.

The official trailer is full of good stuff which you can check out below as well:

With so much going on and everything that will be around to stay after The Dawning, it’s great to see Bungie rebound after the Festival of the Cost… I mean Lost, event that was heavily focused on microtransactions.  What do you think?  What else do you hope happens for the upcoming Dawning event?  Let us know in the comment section below!

Her Majesty’s SPIFFING

her-majestys-spiffing

The Empire Staggers Back in the wake of political developments during the summer of 2016 and the events that followed, Britain found itself increasingly isolated from global society. Frustrated by the demise of this once great nation Her Majesty the Queen concluded that the elected representatives at Westminster were no longer fit to govern her United Kingdom. Having dissolved parliament, returning the United Kingdom to an autocratic government, improvements were immediate and wide ranging. However, ever the pragmatist, Her Majesty concluded that, given the complications Britain was facing returning to a position of power on earth, perhaps it was time to focus her attention elsewhere… Establishing S.P.I.F.F.I.N.G. (Special Planetary Investigative Force For Inhabiting New Galaxies) Her Majesty has turned to the stars in a bid to establish a new, Galactic British Empire! Assuming command of the near futuristic space ship HMSS Imperialise and her crew (distinguished veteran and gentleman Captain Frank Lee English and Aled, his mild mannered South Walean colleague) YOU will venture into the cosmos, solving puzzles, engaging in witty banter, deal with crippling claustrophobia, gradually succumb to the sustained exposure of cosmic radiation and so on, all for Queen and Country. Heck, along the way, you may stumble into a few other folks venturing about the cosmos with their own intergalactic aspirations…

The Dwarves Review http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/the-dwarves-review/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/the-dwarves-review/#respond Sun, 04 Dec 2016 19:00:28 +0000 Robert Rodkey $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/images/default.jpg'; http://www.xboxoneuk.com/?p=51195 The Dwarves

Back in 2003, Markus Heitz released the first book in a new fantasy series known as The Dwarves. Set in the mythical medieval Girdlegard, the fantasy adventure features races, including Dwarves. Now, after many books in the series, fans have a game set in this world. Developed by KING Art, The Dwarves is a fantasy RPG that, even outside of battle, allows you to really think about what to do next, as every choice could bring you to death.

This is, first and foremost, a story, and anyone who has any interest in, say, The Lord of the Rings or any other form of fantasy will be captivated by the plot. You play as Tungdil Goldhand, a young blacksmith, who is the only dwarf in Ionandar, one of Girdlegard’s five enchanted realms. These realms, rich in magical energy force fields, are ruled by magi, while other lands are ruled by the kings and queens of Girdlegard. When sent out on a quest to deliver some magical items to a friend of your adopted father, you are pitched into a war against Orcs.

dwarves-the-2

Travel throughout the realm is by means of a world map, dotted with points of interest. Every time you move you consume food and resources, and it’s important to manage these resources on your travels. With each movement, there is narration; in fact, almost everything you do is narrated and moves the story forward. This narration – and the story – does an amazing job at bringing Girdlegard to life. Drawing heavily on the fantasy books, as you would expect, The Dwarves builds one of the most engaging and complete worlds we’ve ever encountered.

“The Dwarves offers one of the most descriptive and immersive storytelling experiences around.”
Throughout your time, you’ll learn to weigh every decision yo make carefully. You’ll make countless decisions that influence your progress; the impact of each decision is keenly felt – sometimes seconds later, or sometimes even after hours have passed.

Thankfully, plentiful checkpoints and auto-saves meant those decisions that led us to have our throats slit in our beds meant our progress wasn’t hindered too much, but still every decision elicited the thrill of excitement.

Dwarves, The 2

Whilst the story is engaging and every decision had us second guessing ourselves, the time comes – as with so many fantasy RPGs before – to do battle. Going into a battle, you are given the chance to equip items which may help you, and as you level up, you will unlock new abilities. It feels very much like Diablo with an isometric camera giving you a decent view of the battle. You can switch between your allies at will, turning your focus on any area of the battle.

Battles are grand in scale, but with two opposing armies on screen the action can stutter and slow, which is disappointing given how much polish the rest of the game exudes. There’s still fun to be had but we can’t help feeling that the magnificent storytelling and compelling strategy deserved a better denouement. Our biggest issue with the combat system, though, is how easy it is to accidentally hurt friendly NPCs. So many enemies and friendlies on screen, all constantly moving, might be a realistic depiction of battle (between dwarves and orcs) but it’s all too easy to target an enemy with an ability or attack, only for them to move at the last second, your attack injuring friendly troops instead. It’s not an issue we’ve ever encountered in any other large scale battle game, and when it happens it feels like the game’s to blame, rather than any lack of skill on our part.

dwarves-the-1

As clunky and repetitive as battles can feel, it was never quite enough for us to abandon our quest. The compelling story, married with pretty visuals, utterly stellar voice acting and a stunning sound track, kept us coming back for more. The musical score, in particular, tells its own tale of epic battles and the sheer scale of the journey you are on. Great stuff. The voice talent, too, is a cut above the usual – and feels just right for the world that KING Art has recreated.

So good is the story and the atmosphere we can forgive a few missteps along the way, in particular the merely average combat. The Dwarves offers one of the most descriptive and immersive storytelling experiences around, and we couldn’t help falling on love with it, despite its flaws.

The Dwarves is available in the Store, priced £31.99.

Since the release, information of this coming new Destiny event: The Dawning. We have been given dribs and drabs of information that quite frankly is god damn exciting!

The new event that runs from 13th Dec – Jan 3rd includes alot of great editions, one of the biggest being Sparrow Racing League (SRL), check out more information on The Dawning HERE.

Bungie has now tweeted that everyday from Dec 13th to Jan 3rd you can find new gifts from city citizens in the tower. So it seems Destiny’s Tower NPCs will finally have a role to play in the game rather than wondering aimlessly around the Tower.

They will give you a new gift everyday in The Dawning event, exactly what these gifts are remain a surprise. The Tower will also get a winter wonderland makeover with giant snowflakes and bunting everywhere.

It has been confirmed, SRL will continue to be playable after The Dawning event via Private Matches, this will include the 2 Taken King tracks and the 2 new Rise Of Iron tracks. If you only own the Taken King DLC you will only be able to play the 2 older tracks after the event.

So what do you guardians think, are you excited for this winter event?

It seems December is going to be very busy. Also don’t forget, Iron Banner will be available from next week too, full details can be found HERE. Let us know what you think about the new event and all the trimmings in the comments below.

Top Five Couch Multiplayer Games http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/top-five-couch-multiplayer-games/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/top-five-couch-multiplayer-games/#comments Sun, 04 Dec 2016 08:00:13 +0000 Stacey $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/images/default.jpg'; http://www.xboxoneuk.com/?p=51355 Top Five Couch Multiplayer Games

Friends. Don’cha just love ’em? They come ’round to your house, eat all the chicken wings, and then proceed to get hot sauce all over your Lunar White controller. You know what they deserve? A total beat down.

Here are our five favourite games for humiliating our nearest and dearest, right to their stupid, fat faces.

Killer Instinct

Sometimes there’s nothing better than just beating someone up – virtually, that is. The resurrection of the Killer Instinct franchise was a surprise to many, but this free to play beat ’em up has plenty to offer.

Killer Instinct

While noobs can have plenty of fun button bashing, the more thoughtful beat ’em up aficionado will enjoy many combo opportunities. The combat system is fun and accessible for the beginner, with plenty of depth for those willing to learn. If you’ve fast reactions or make good reads, the combo breaker is your friend, and more often than not bouts are balanced on a knife edge. It’s how a beat ’em up should be.

Released free to play, there’s no financial investment needed if you’re unsure if this is the game for you, but believe us when we tell you you’ll want to expand that experience with a few reasonably priced micro-transactions.

Friend Humiliation Rating: A solid 3 black eyes out of 5.

Screencheat

Screencheat’s conceit rolls us back to the heyday of couch multiplayer shooters. Screen cheating is the diabolical tactic of identifying your foe’s whereabouts by looking at their half or quarter of the screen during split screen play. Screen cheating is something that everyone has been guilty of at one time or another – it’s the cause of many an argument, cushion to the face, unplugged controller, dead arm or worse.

ScreenCheat

To succeed in Screencheat you have to screen cheat; in a game in which everyone is invisible, looking at your foe’s portion of the screen is the only way to pinpoint them! The game’s clever maps are all brightly colour coded to help you locate your prey – and learning the maps will give you a supreme advantage over your opponents. If you have up to three friends at a time who need taking down a peg or two, Screencheat gives you tools to do so – for just £11.99.

Friend Humiliation Rating: A worthy 3 hobby horses of doom out of 5.

Tumblestone

If you’d rather think your friends into humiliation than punch or shoot, we humbly suggest you hand them a controller and sit them down in front of Tumblestone. This characterful and sideways-with-a-twist take on the match-three puzzler won us over with its engaging story, ever-fresh mechanics and its ability to never let you get away with just one more game.

Tumblestone

Playing like an upside-down Tetris, your protagonist sits at the bottom of the board and shoots upwards to remove coloured blocks (the titular Tumblestones) in groups of three of the same colour. Keep getting it right, and you’ll clear the board and move on to the next level. Get it wrong – by leaving yourself without three matching blocks to remove  – and you’ll have to start again.

Multiplayer Tumblestone pits you against up to three (local or online) friends (or strangers), each racing to clear their puzzles the fastest. With everyone on screen at the same time, there’s the pressure of seeing just how much better your challengers are doing than you – it’s fun and engaging. Success requires you not panic or rush – the surest way to lose is to have to abort a puzzle and start again. Take a breath, take your time, pick the right move. AND CRUSH THEM.

Tumblestone was part of Games with Gold a few months ago, but if you missed it you can pick it up for £15.99.

Friend Humiliation Rating: A hefty 4 dream-crushing blocks out of 5.

Unnamed Fiasco

Platform battlers are a fun distraction, but generally you won’t need more than one or two in your library. So what does Unnamed Fiasco offer that sets it apart from its rivals?

With five characters to choose from – an old lady with a moustache, a raging bull, a Lucha libre baby fighter, a hipster robot and a charming bullfighter –  there’s a limited palette for you to enjoy. Although aesthetically different, this is no hero shooter: all characters have the same abilities, so there’s no need to worry that your friend next to you has somehow got an advantage.

Unnamed Fiasco

If Unnamed Fiasco had to be summed up in one word, it’s chaos. And that’s almost always a good thing for a multiplayer game! In-game power-ups are delivered by destroying Piñatas – each one will offer a random power up, a la Mario Kart. Weapon jammers, jetpacks, mines, golden guns, shields and many more items are available to help you face your opponents.

Let’s recap: four wacky characters running around a Mexican battleground trying to shoot each other, blasting Piñatas for random power ups, and random game altering effects. What’s not to like?

With friends, Unnamed Fiasco is an absolute hoot. Pick it up for just £7.99.

Friend Humiliation Rating: A magnificent 4 lycra-clad luchadores out of 5.

Mantis Burn Racing

Now we’re at the pointy end of our list, with Mantis Burn Racing. This is a (more or less) top down racer in the grand tradition, tracing its heritage back to Up ‘N Down, Skidmarks, Super Sprint and other classics of that ilk. So, you know what to expect: light goes green, floor it, power slide maniacally around bends and scream to the finish line… But there’s much more to it than that, especially when it comes to multiplayer.

Mantis Burn Racing rewards precision, and precision only comes from learning every detail of the handful of tracks across the two distinct locations on offer (rural dustbowl and high-tech city streets). Knowing exactly how close you can drift to that pack of rocks, knowing exactly which corners are worth cutting, will be the difference between winning and… well, winning’s everything.

Beneath the impeccably polished visuals – this is a very pretty game – there are a few surprises. The first is how weighty your racers feel. All classes of vehicle (light, medium and heavy) handle with a solidity that hints at an impressive physics engine working away under the bonnet. The second is the beautifully balanced upgrade system. Each vehicle (you start with a rookie medium class car) comes with several slots, into which upgrades are fitted. Grippier tyres, beefier engines, slicker gearboxes for increased acceleration, better suspension, or a more powerful boost.

If you want to best your friends, look no further than the local multiplayer options. The four-player split-screen setup is great – in fact Mantis Burn Racing played with friends is never less than riotous fun – and the newly added single-screen Spotlight mode is a fantastic addition. Battle your friends to be the last car in the spotlight for those all important bragging rights.

Grab Mantis Burn Racing for a bargain £11.99 – you won’t regret it!

Friend Humiliation Rating: An incredible 5 smoking tyres out of 5.

~

So, there you have it – five totally different games to humiliate your friends in. Of course, just remember – they’re just as likely to humiliate you!

Do let us know if you pick up any of these games – especially Mantis Burn Racing. With this game’s plethora of online options, and a compelling single player game to boot, it’s an absolute joy!

Xbox One Support | Quick Fixes http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/xbox-one-support-quick-fixes/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/xbox-one-support-quick-fixes/#respond Sun, 04 Dec 2016 00:00:05 +0000 Stacey $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/images/default.jpg'; http://www.xboxoneuk.com/?p=32459 Xbox News Roundup

The Xbox One is a complicated beastie – but a pretty reliable one. However, from time to time, things do go wrong. Here we take a quick look at some of the troubleshooting steps that may help.

Please note: xbox.com/support is the official place for problem solving – but this article might be a useful place to start.

1. Turn it off and on again

Yes this works – and will solve most minor problems.

To turn off, do one of the following

  • Use the power button to turn off your console, or
  • say “Xbox, Turn off” (only for Kinect equipped consoles!), or
  • hold down the guide button for two full seconds and choose “turn off.”

Once the console has completely shut down, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again by

  • Press the power button on the front of the console, or
  • say “Xbox on” (only for Kinect equipped consoles set to “Instant On”)

Banner Xbox Black

2. Power Cycle (sometimes called a hard reset, full reboot or cold restart)

A full power cycle reboots the console fully. Doing this does not erase any of your games or data, but will clear your cache.

Follow the steps below to power cycle your Xbox One console:

  1. Turn off your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the console for approximately 10 seconds.
  2. Turn your console back on by pressing the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox button on your controller.

If you don’t see the green boot-up animation when the console restarts, repeat these steps. Make sure that you hold the power button until the console completely shuts down.

3. Power Cycle with air gap

A full power cycle reboots the console fully. Doing this does not erase any of your games or data, but will clear your cache. Air gapping involves also unplugging the Xbox One console from the wall, too – there is some debate about whether this gives materially different results from an ordinary power cycle.

Follow the steps below to power cycle your Xbox One console:

  1. Turn off your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the console for approximately 10 seconds.
  2. Unplug the power lead of the console from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait two minutes.
  4. Plug the power lead of the console back into the wall outlet.
  5. Turn your console back on by pressing the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox button on your controller.

If you don’t see the green boot-up animation when the console restarts, repeat these steps. Make sure that you hold the power button until the console completely shuts down

4. Restore to Factory Settings – Console

Sometimes you will just want a fresh start, and return your console to its factory settings. This is handy if you have bought a used console and some dope has left their Gamertag set up on it. (Note: NEVER DO THIS).

Restoring your console to the factory default settings erases all accounts, apps, games, saved games, and settings. Anything not synchronised with Xbox Live will be lost. Your console syncs with Xbox Live automatically when it is connected with the service.

  1. Scroll left on the Home screen to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All Settings.
  4. Select System.
  5. Select Console info & updates.
  6. Select Restore factory defaults.
  7. Read the warning message, and then select Yes.

5. Offline recovery from a failed update

If you experience an issue during a console update, power cycling will usually resolve the problem. However, there are times when you will need to perform an offline update. This involves downloading the correct Console Operating System to a USB Flash Drive and then using that to update your console.

Doing this does not erase any of your games or data.

Please note: if you suffer from an issue during an update, we highly recommend you follow the instructions in the failed update troubleshooter on the Xbox Support website. However, if you are sure that you need to try an offline update, here is how to do it.

6. Restore to Factory Settings – using offline method.

The offline Factory Reset is useful if there’s been a problem and you can’t get to the home screen of your console. An offline factory reset involves downloading a full console Operating System to a USB Flash Drive and then using that to update your console.

This will erase your games and data, so use with caution. It’s usually the last resort before sending your console away for repair.

Again, before you get to this stage we would recommend you follow the advice in the relevant Xbox Support troubleshooter. However, if you are sure you need to perform an offline factory update, here is how to do it.

Ubisoft’s The Division has seen somewhat of a resurgence of late, with the new Survival update becoming an unexpected hit!

This second major expansion of the game robs you of your hard-earned gear, and infects you with an illness. To survive on your journey to the centre of the map you’ll need to find clothes, food, and medicine alongside the usual NPCs and Rogue Agents intent on doing you harm. It turns the race for the best gear completely on its head, and really has tempted us back to Manhattan.

Everybody loves free stuff. And free games? We love those even more. Let’s take a look at the current list of free games on Xbox One. Of course, we’re not just talking about one or two free games, but THIRTY NINE!

If you are a brand new Xbox One owner, here’s an instant game library that’ll keep you entertained for hours without having to spend another penny. Even if you’ve had your console for a while, there’s bound to be something on this list that catches your eye.

Check out the full list below – there are a lot more games on this list than many people know about!

Games with Gold

Other limited Time Offers

  • None right now.

Now I’m sure you’ll agree that’s a LOT of free games. They might not all be AAA games, and some are ‘free to play‘ and include micro transactions to get the full experience, but this list isn’t to be sniffed at.

Will you be toddling off to the Xbox Store to download any of these freebies? If you do, feel free to tell us in the comments below! Let us know whether any of them become a surprise favourite, or if you unexpectedly master any of them!

Destiny: The Dawning Confirmed As Newest Addition to Destiny http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/destiny-the-dawning-confirmed-as-newest-addition-to-destiny/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/destiny-the-dawning-confirmed-as-newest-addition-to-destiny/#respond Sat, 03 Dec 2016 18:35:09 +0000 Robert Rodkey $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . Bungie showed off it’s next event that is actually slightly more than an event.  Later this month we will be getting Destiny: The Dawning.  The Dawning is the winter event that will host this year’s Sparrow Racing League.  SRL will feature new track and new sparrows.  It appeared to be 2 new tracks, one being a winter Cosmodrome track and the other a vex based Mars map.  There was no mention to exactly how many tracks there will be.  But this isn’t everything.

Guardians will also be getting strike scoring.  This appears to be a points based system like Challenge of the Elders where you can compete for the top spot of a leaderboard.  This will give even more replay value for the strikes we have.

New weapons and armor will be coming with The Dawning also.  There was a glimpse of the Icebreaker as well in the trailer.  This is a famed exotic sniper rifle from vanilla Destiny.  Other weapons involved new ornaments as well as the separate elemental versions of the Thunderlord which have been known about for a year now.

There also will be new quests.  SRL will surely have its own quest but there are PvE based quests in the trailer as well so we will await more details on that.

Check out the trailer below:

What do you think of The Dawning?  It’s great to see there will be more than just racing!

Gears Of War 4 To Get Big December Update http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/gears-of-war-4-to-get-big-december-update/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/gears-of-war-4-to-get-big-december-update/#respond Sat, 03 Dec 2016 16:00:52 +0000 Andy Williams $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . Earlier this week we told you about an event this weekend that will allow you to play Gears of War 4 on your Xbox against players playing on PC this weekend. This event is to allow The Coalition to test whether cross-play is a viable permanent option.

It has now been announced that after this event Gears of War 4 will get a large update adding a lot of new content. This update will roll out on December the 6th and will include “Gearmas” goodies, 2 new multiplayer maps, as well as some new fixes and improvements to the overall Gears of War experience.

The two new maps are Speyer and Glory. As we have come to expect we nowadays we have been treated to flyover videos of each of the new maps and you can enjoy them here.

Speyer is an old abandoned district that is preserved in a pre-locust invasion state. This is a map that is set up to be ideal for long range combat so get your Longshots at the ready.

The second map, Glory, is set at the site of massive monument to the glory of the COG and is a map of dominance. If you can dominate the map then you can get your hands on a mounted turret aimed at the courtyard below.

These new maps will be added to the playlists on December 13 while Gridlock and Relic will be retired for a short time. There is also an added bonus for season pass owners as they get double XP for playing the developers playlist when it is available.

The other fixes added will include:

  • A daily rewards system.
  • Improved visual feedback for damage dealt with the Gnasher.
  • Vertical split-screen for Windows 10 players.
  • Improvements in footstep audio balance.

Xbox Live is a wonderful place. It’s full of opportunities to chainsaw, kerb stomp and just generally mash your PC-loving friends’ heads in.

Well, it is this weekend, thanks to the Coalition’s free Gears of War 4 Cross Platform playlists!

“The Coalition have announced that the Crossplay Versus playlist will be available this weekend as a test to ‘evaluate the potential of a more permanent crossplay solution in the future to allow Windows 10 and Xbox One gamers to play together in Versus outside of Private Matches.’ As an added incentive, you’ll earn increased XP for win/loss match completion. You might never even match up with a PC player, but extra XP is always a plus. The Road to Re-Up is long and hard, so take what help you can get.”

~ Ash, Xbox One UK

To access the playlists, just head to ‘Versus’, then ‘Play Special Event.’

This is a test weekend for a feature that Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition hopes will become a regular thing. Of course, that tweet has already attracted the usual PC MasterRace / ConsolesAreKing nonsense. We all love games, why can’t we all get along? (as I chainsaw you in the face, obviously).

Will you be taking advantage of this Crossplay weekend? Let us know in the comments!

Fun fact: This week marks 26 consecutive weeks with at least one game added to the list – that’s a full half-year of gaming excellence!

How to install and play Xbox 360 backward compatible games on your Xbox One

  • Disc: For disc-based games that are a part of the Back Compat game catalog, simply insert the disc and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. After the game has finished downloading, you will still need to keep the game disc in the drive to play.
  • Digital: The digital titles that you own and are part of the Back Compat game catalog will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section on your Xbox One, and once they are installed they will show up in the Games section of your Xbox One.

TIP: To open the Xbox 360 dashboard from within the Xbox One environment, hold the view and menu buttons.

How to purchase Xbox 360 games if you don’t own an Xbox 360 – using xbox.com

If you want to purchase an Xbox 360 title and don’t own or have access to an Xbox 360, you can still purchase the game digitally online from the Xbox marketplace. Simply log into your account at http://www.xbox.com and navigate to the catalog of Xbox 360 titles. Once you select a title, you will see the option to download it to your Xbox 360. Clicking on the download button actually brings up the purchasing screen. Once you purchase the game and the transaction is complete, the game will be registered to your account.

How to purchase Xbox 360 games if you don’t own an Xbox 360 – using your Xbox One

Xbox 360 games that are part of the backwards compatibility programme can now be purchased directly from the Store on your Xbox One – you won’t be able to use Store Credit to purchase these games though – you’ll need to have a payment option associated with your account.

A few things to note:

  • You have to have a valid payment option on file to purchase any title.
  • If a game is free, you’re still required to “purchase” it – you just won’t be charged anything for it.
  • The Xbox 360 Marketplace and the Xbox One Store websites use different architecture, so if you have credit but no payment option associated with your account, you won’t be able to use the credit to purchase Xbox 360 titles. You will have to add a payment option or purchase the title using an Xbox 360 console.
  • Not all Xbox 360 games are backward compatible with Xbox One, but more are being added all the time.

Games with Gold

TIP: Every month Xbox Live Gold members get two free Xbox One and two free Xbox 360 games with the Games With Gold program. You can redeem these free games at http://www.xbox.com whether you own the console or not – as long as you have an account. If you don’t own an Xbox One and decide to purchase one in the future, you’ll already have a collection of games available to you. And if you don’t own an Xbox 360 every Games with Gold 360 game since November 2015 is included in the backward compatible programme, so you’ll be able to play them on your Xbox One.

Which titles would you like to see added? Let us know in the comments!

BackwardsCompatible

The list of Xbox 360 games playable on your Xbox One is growing all the time – we’re at 297 right now – thanks to new games joining the Backwards Compatibility programme. That’s 205 Arcade Games and 92 Games on Demand titles, stats fans!

Fun fact: This week marks 26 consecutive weeks with at least one game added to the list – that’s a full half-year of gaming excellence!

Some of the most popular Xbox 360 games have already been added – Call of Duty: Black Ops and Red Dead Redemption among them. There are some truly classic arcade titles in the list, too – including Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Braid and Space Giraffe.

Scroll down to the foot of the page for more information about how Backwards Compatibility works. And rest assured, as new games are added we’ll let you know about them!

You can check out the full list of titles below.

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition Arriving in April http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/bulletstorm-full-clip-edition-arriving-in-april/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/bulletstorm-full-clip-edition-arriving-in-april/#respond Fri, 02 Dec 2016 23:59:07 +0000 Ashley Bates $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . Forget your Guardians of the Galaxy, screw your Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay and shove your Game of the Year winners. There’s only one piece of news you should be concerned about coming out of The Game Awards: BULLETSTORM IS GETTING REMASTERED!

Bulletstorm was an underrated first person shooter that challenged you to “kill with skill”. Armed with a meaty kick and a brilliant energy whip, enemies weren’t so much threats as they were fodder for your artistic murdering.

Unfortunately, sales were lacklustre, and despite the sequel bait ending, Bulletstorm looked to be a one and done affair. A shame really, given how much fun the skill kills were. Good job that Gearbox are resurrecting Bulletstorm via remaster then, huh?

Slated for release on April 7, the Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition will include everything from the original game (campaign, challenges, multiplayer) alongside the usual updated graphics and performance. You’ve also got some brand new Score Attack maps to challenge your friends on, and an Overkill Campaign that features an unrestricted

Perhaps the most significant update though, and maybe the dealmaker for some, is the inclusion of certain Mr Duke Nukem. Acting as a new playable character, you can replace lead protagonist Grayson Hunt with Nukem, who is fully voiced by long time voice-over artist Jon St John. This will only be available to people who pre-order, though.

This looks set to be one of the better remasters on Xbox One, and it might even lead to more games in the Bulletstorm series. Who knows? Sound off your thoughts in the comments below!

ARK: Survival Evolved Cross Play Delayed and Other Updates Detailed http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/ark-survival-evolved-cross-play-delayed-and-other-updates-detailed/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/ark-survival-evolved-cross-play-delayed-and-other-updates-detailed/#respond Fri, 02 Dec 2016 22:00:20 +0000 Robert Rodkey $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . For those looking to take advantage of cross play compatibility between PC and and Xbox One for ARK: Survival Evolved will have to wait a little while longer.  While it was originally set for December, we will have till 2017.  Luckily it’s going to be January 2017.  Developer Studio Wildcard lead developer Jeremy Stieglitz explained that it “requires reformatting ARK’s application handling to work with Universal Windows Platform.”  So look to have Play Anywhere capability next month.

Studio Wildcard co-founder Jesse Rapczack also confirmed once again Windows 10 owners will be able to set up their own dedicated servers to run ARK: Survival Evolved. Presumably, server hosting companies will take advantage of this to offer server rentals for those that want to run their own ARK server without dealing with the hardware and connection details.  Also, there is talk swirling about players being able to host and play on the same hardware through separate applications.

Along that time we will also see update 748 as well.  The next update will bring Procedurally Generated Maps (PGM). The ability to create semi-randomized maps was introduced to the PC version of ARK: Survival Evolved a little over a month ago.

It’s amazing to see how much effort is going into making ARK the beauty that it is.  Either way it looks good for the future of ARK: Survival Evolved.  What do you think?  Let us know in the comment sections below?

Silence Review http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/silence-review/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/silence-review/#respond Fri, 02 Dec 2016 19:00:47 +0000 Stephen Loftus $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/images/default.jpg'; http://www.xboxoneuk.com/?p=50781 silence-screne

Daedalic’s Silence is a sequel to the point and click adventure The Whispered World, released back in 2009. This time however, the world you’re exploring is a lot more grim than the land of Silence once was; playing upon the concept of the barrier between life and death, everything is conjured up from one teenager’s imagination.

Silence is quite unsettling from the get go, as this title toys around with psychology and similar themes. From the orphans’ escape of an air raid, to the realisation that you’ve just walked out of a humongous world war unscathed, you’ll experience all the darker thoughts that inhabit this child’s mind.

silence-2

Playing primarily as Noah, an orphaned teenager looking after his young sister Renie, the youngsters find themselves taking shelter from an air raid. To pass the time, Noah tells his sister a story of a world once before of which he had dreamt. Soon, though, Noah’s vivid imagination creates that world for real, and you are transported to the world of Silence. And it’s not pretty. Somehow, Noah and his sister become separated, and this place that Noah would once have recognised is now a complete mess, destroyed by The False Queen and her puppets, known as Seekers.

This is a point and click adventure with a unique mechanism that involves a worm named Spot. Spot’s created from a sock – because how else would a child create a worm character? – and using Spot’s ability to inflate and deflate, you must solve puzzles to progress through the game. For example, you might need to push a boulder, allowing you to reach a cliff you couldn’t before. Throughout, you’ll be swapping between Spot and Noah to help solve puzzles.

silence-seeker

Usefully, Silence includes a wealth of options to fine-tune the challenge the game offers. More than just turning hints on and off, these options allow you to decide whether or not objects are highlighted, choose show objects’ names, or provide hints. Or you can simply turn off help completely to make it extremely challenging. After all, in this world of imagination, Noah can die.

The puzzles soon become repetitive as the game progresses, with the majority of them forcing you to travel back and forth between two areas, making things more tedious than needs be. Only Spot’s presence offers any depth to the puzzles. While the puzzles are run of the mill, it’s Silence’s eerie story and well-realised characters that lend the game a significant level of charm. The voice acting, though, leaves something to be desired, responding with what feels like a forced narrative with no emotion when making certain choices.

All in all, this is certainly one fairy tale that would make even the Grimm Brothers squirm, capturing the dystopian imagination of one child mind, while opening up yours to the reality of life and death, and everything in between.

Watch out for Silence arriving in the Store shortly, where it will cost £24.99.

Dead Rising 4 Launch Trailer http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/dead-rising-4-launch-trailer/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/news/dead-rising-4-launch-trailer/#respond Fri, 02 Dec 2016 16:00:09 +0000 Bryan O'Shea $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/images/default.jpg'; http://www.xboxoneuk.com/?p=51298 dead-rising-4-e3-main

For fans of comedic, zombie slaying, romps there aren’t many better game franchises than Dead Rising. The series has looked up everything required to make a serious, dark and dramatic zombie thriller (which developers Capcom know a little something about) and gone in completely the opposite direction.

This zany approach often carries over into the advertising campaign for Dead Rising titles, and the launch trailer for Dead Rising 4 is no exception:

Fitting this trailer should come at the start of December as it features Dead Rising icon Frank West narrate his story of zombie slaying glee in the style of a traditional Christmas tale.

A lot is featured in the launch promo from exo-suits that allow you to send zombies on a one way to trip suplex city, right through to a crushing candy cane you use to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Let’s not forgot classic weapons such as Frank’s trademark baseball bat either, there’s going to be plenty of way to dish out the pain in Dead Rising 4.

Are you excited to return to Willamette? If so what’s your first objective when you arrive there on the darkest of Fridays? Look for a bargain or cut through the swathes of undead? The choice is yours!

Dead Rising 4 goes on sale this coming Tuesday, 6th December, will you be grabbing a copy? Let us know in the comments below!

Moto Racer 4 Review http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/moto-racer-4-review/ http://www.xboxoneuk.com/xbox-one/moto-racer-4-review/#respond Fri, 02 Dec 2016 15:00:43 +0000 Andrew 'Bowsey' Bowes $postimage = ( $postimages ) ? $postimages[0] : get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/images/default.jpg'; http://www.xboxoneuk.com/?p=49956 moto-racer-4-3

The cult arcade-style motorbike racing game Moto Racer 4 makes its first outing on Xbox One. Developed by Microids and Artefacts Studio under the supervision of the original Moto Racer designer Paul Cuisset, Moto Racer 4 brings speed and aggression together. The idea of an ‘old-school arcade racer’ appeals to us no end, so we went into this game hopeful on so many levels; unfortunately it failed to impress on any of them.

Although sporting the usual array of options – career, quick play, and both on-line and local multiplayer – each is a disappointment. Career play, for example, is unlock-based with no real story to be found, just a host of seemingly disconnected races to be completed. Depending on your finishing position in each race you will be awarded stars, these stars are used to unlock the next race. Progression becomes a grind, as you repeat races to eventually earn enough stars to progress. It’s an archaic mechanic that sits uneasily alongside games that make all their content available from the get go.

moto-racer-4-5822f2e6e24ef

The level design is simplistic, but this does allow for a feeling of speed, especially when you’re awarded with an extra boost for performing a wheelie or landing a jump. This speed doesn’t last, though, thanks to the skittish controls. The slightest left or right turn will now have you snaking along for a good 10 seconds as you fight for control over the bike, only to regain control, ready for it to begin again after the next bend. The speed, the poor controls and the oncoming traffic, all add up to give a very poor racing experience.

The game’s problems unfortunately aren’t limited to just the poor controls; it’s littered with issues and flaws.

There’s little to suggest that this isn’t a game from the last generation – everything looks fine when it’s whizzing by, but when you slow or stop there’s a noticeable lack of finesse in the visuals, though at least this means it moves at a swift pace and feels like it maintains a steady 60 fps.

When it comes to how the game sounds, the high pitched whine of the bike engine begins to grind on you after a few minutes, and you’re forced to zone it out or switch it off.

Ultimately, the biggest disappointment is that Moto Racer 4 just doesn’t know what kind of game it wants to be. Its broad brush approach encircles racer, stunt game and Road Rash clone, and fails to deliver a convincing experience in any of those areas. There’s fun to be had, but to find it you’ll have to overlook some significant flaws.

Moto Racer 4 is available from the Store, priced £31.99.
