Guacamelee developers Creative Bytes introduces an original way to navigate around the levels in this platform-puzzler but does Embers of Mirrim try too hard? Although there is no narrative other than the initial tutorial instructions, the cut scenes give you the general gist of the story which sees a couple of creatures; that could only be described as cats with antlers, from opposite factions - light and dark, merging together to become one entity with the power to split itself into two embers: that being light and dark. As you progress through the beginning levels, the game will slowly introduce ... Read More »
The indie surge has been significant over the last decade. With Xbox Live Arcade leading the charge for small developers, we’ve seen a slew of classic titles over the years that may of otherwise never came to be. A Walk in the Dark from developers Flying Turtle was actually released five years ago on PC, at a time when the indie scene was becoming more prolific. And with every good title we also saw something best left alone. Prolific titles have been a clear influence for A Walk in the Dark. Super Meat Boy and Limbo being two primary examples. ... Portal Knights is one of those games that comes along every now and then and tries to steal the crown from the ultimate sandbox game, Minecraft, whilst taking pointers from Terraria. There isn't much of a story here except for the fact that a 'fracture' had arrived to the world, creating portals between all the islands in the world, and it's up to you, whoever you may be, to travelling to and fro, completing quests and choosing one of these islands to call "home". As much as this is sandbox adventure title, it also focuses heavily on RPG elements to ... Read More »
From developers 10tons; who brought you many puzzle games such as Tennis in the Face and Sparkle, comes Spellspire, a genius (word worth a measly 7 points in Scrabble) mix of RPG and a word game. The game instantly throws you into the action (if you could call it that), with the first level outlining the basics of the game. It's rather quite simple: Make words of three letters or more from the ten available letters in order to eliminate the enemies that are slowly heading towards you, and reach the chest at the end of the level. However, the ... Read More »

A Brief History in Time Back in 2008, the then-developers Midway Games had an idea to release a Mortal Kombat crossover game featuring some of the well-known DC characters battling it out amongst Mortal Kombat characters. That would be known simply as Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe. Unfortunately, not long after its release, the developers got into some financial trouble and eventually sold their company to what is now known as NetherRealm Studios; part of the Warner Bros studios. In 2013 they decided to go all out with a fighting game dedicated to just characters from the DC Universe. It ... Read More »
Right Nice Games' first foray into games development comes in the form of a homage to classic 3D platformers resembling the likes of Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank, promising not only a throwback, but a comeback. But does it deliver? Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island sees you start out on a tutorial-based level as Skylar, a cat that has been cybernetically re-constructed and had her memories wiped by the evil CRT. Introducing you to the basic mechanics of the game, it immediately brings back nostalgia as you familiarise yourself with the traversal manoeuvres of ... Read More »
