Blizzard to take a hard line with Overwatch cheaters

Here in the Xbox One UK Castle we’re really looking forward to Overwatch; we enjoyed the beta immensely – as did some 9.7 million of you – and its take on the competitive shooter is the shot in the arm the genre needs. Accordingly, we were pleased to see that developer Blizzard has been up-front about the consequences for cheating. Banned permanently on a first offence. “If a player is found to be cheating—or using hacks, bots, or third-party software that provides any sort of unfair advantage—that player will be permanently banned from the game. Full stop. Not only does cheating … Read More »

Beatsplosion dev announces Kung-Fu for Kinect

Fighter Within was a launch title for Xbox One, and we’re still rinsing our eyes out with bleach. (Note to kids, Americans and other impressionable folks: don’t do this.) Some wounds run deep, though, and despite our genuinely positive approach to life in general and Xbox in particular, it’s fair to say that the thought of another bite at the motion-controlled-fighter cherry isn’t exactly exciting our taste buds. Enter Kung-Fu for Kinect. Let’s back up a little. Kung-Fu for Kinect is under development by Virtual Air Guitar company – the name behind the brilliant Beatsplosion, and the highly playable Squid Hero … Read More »

Modern Warfare Trilogy could be the last straw

Every now and then there’s an announcement by a major publisher that catches us by surprise – and not in a good way. We try all sorts of mental gymnastics to justify that publisher’s actions as a positive for the gamer but sometimes we’re just left with a vague sense of bafflement and a perplexed, “Huh?” on our lips. Ubisoft’s weird statement that women are too hard to animate realistically (in relation to AC: Unity‘s multiplayer not including any women as playable characters) was one. And the decision by – probably – Activision to re-release all three Call of Duty: Modern Warfare … Read More »

Witcher 3 dev hopeful of return to Geralt’s world

Blood and Wine will be the final expansion for the humongous (and critically very well received) Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, with developer CD Projekt Red’s attention already on their next full game, Cyberpunk 2077. However, it looks as though Blood and Wine will not be our final chance to guide Geralt -or some other hero – on his slightly misogynistic path of adventure. Not if game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz has his way, that is. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Tomaszkiewicz had this to say about the prospects of a return to the Witcher franchise: “Personally I hope that someday in the … Read More »

News Roundup | 2 May – 8 May

There’s no doubt that Call of Duty is one of the most recognisable names in naming and, despite diminishing returns from more recent examples of the franchise, CoD still makes the news. When the Infinite War Teaser Trailer dropped, the Internet was agog. And then, it seemed, angry. Myriad posts on social media channels the Internet over show there’s dismay Activision appears to be driving the Infinity Ward / Treyarch / Sledgehammer helmed series further into the future. Fans are not happy. Backwards Compatibility. We love it. Twice this week the boffins over at Xbox released batches of new backwards compatible … Read More »

Fallout 4 Survival Mode lands with Update 1.5

Bethesda has confirmed on its official website that the Fallout 4 1.5 update, which introduces the overhauled Survival Mode for the game, is now live. With an 2.3 Gig update dropping right now, we can confirm that’s the case. Scroll on down to the bottom of this post for the patch notes if that’s your thing. Doubtless this update paves the way for the next DLC pack – Far Harbor – which launches later this month. We have high hopes for Far Harbor; hopefully this is the expansion we’re been waiting for after the relative disappointments of Automatron and Wasteland Workshop. … Read More »

You Died: The Dark Souls Companion Review

Dark Souls is part of gaming’s collective consciousness. A creation of the old school; tough, unforgiving, and enigmatic. It was described, by journalist Keza MacDonald, as “a brutal and demanding third-person action-RPG set in a world full of monstrous, disturbing things that are trying their hardest to end your life as quickly as possible” in the first ever internet review back in 2011. Now, over half a decade later, this incredible, influential game has a book that aims to do it justice – You Died: The Dark Souls Companion. If you haven’t played a Dark Souls game – and we’re … Read More »

I am a super hero. I have no cape, no laser-beam eyes, no mystical hammer. I am unarmed. And there are three figures all pointing their guns at my head, fingers on triggers. Six seconds later, they’re all dead. Because I am a super hero. And time only moves when I do. This is the beauty of SUPERHOT, a shooter pared down to the barest of bones. Each level a story where you are outnumbered and outgunned, the only possible outcome death; yours, or that of the red figures who relentlessly pursue you through colourless environments. Death is inevitable, but the action … Read More »
