It’s a mad, bad, dangerous world, and video games offer an escape from reality. That’s the commonly held theory, at any rate; a theory held, in particular, by people who don’t play video games. But games offer so much more than that. They offer a window into our world, and help us make sense of it. They can help us relate to people, to places and to circumstances that we don’t quite fully understand – and that has the potential to bring us closer together. And games help us make sense of ourselves. And often, we don’t see any of that – we’re … Read More »

Yes, it’s only October but the Christmas Hype starts earlier every year here in the Xbox One UK Castle. And we’re especially excited to see Numskull’s exciting range of traditional Christmas apparel. Nestled cosily amongst the festive AT-ATs, Spidermen and Chun-Lis you’ll find Spartan John-117, Halo‘s Master Chief himself, riffing on his most iconic line. Being able to spend Christmas Day with everyone’s favourite seven foot tall armoured killing machine is, obviously, what Christmas is all about. We’ll let you click through to www.numskull.co.uk to find out how much a jumper you’ll wear for half a day and then abandon when … Read More »

The grind is real. But honestly, what did we expect from an RPG? No, you’ve not wandered into the wrong review by mistake. We’ve ploughed more hours than we care to think about into Mantis Burn Racing – out on 12 October on Xbox One – and if ever there was a simple-looking game that hides its considerable depths, Mantis Burn Racing is it. This is a (more or less) top down racer in the grand tradition, tracing its heritage back to Up ‘N Down, Skidmarks, Super Sprint and other classics of that ilk. So, you know what to expect: light … Read More »

Inside every Xbox One lurks Windows 10 – Microsoft’s all-encompassing operating system that supports the Universal Windows Platform. This means – in theory – any app that uses UWP can run on any Windows 10 device, be it PC, laptop, tablet, phone, or Xbox One. We’ve picked out a few of our favourites. VideoLAN VideoLan – or VLC – is one of the most fully featured video players around, with a support for a wide range of file formats and a whole host of tricks – like electronically boosting volume beyond 100%, useful when that atmospheric soundtrack is just a little … Read More »

We were all sad to see Ellen leave Xbox On – Xbox One UK’s official YouTube channel – but today the rebooted Xbox On channel was trailed with none other than SquidGaming’s Lydia filling the left hand side of our screens, alongside Scottish stalwart @AceyBongos (Graeme Boyd) and the quirkily-haired @BennyCentral. You might know Lydia from SquidGaming, or from her occasional appearance as a talking head on the sadly-departed Videogame Nation, but now you’ll see much more of her on Xbox On – a job she herself says she’s wanted for years and years. Alongside a new presenter (and a … Read More »

Achievements. Don’t you just love them? Often imitated, never bettered (we’re looking at you, Trophies) they have been a major element of the Xbox experience since the very first days of the Xbox 360 back in 2005. For many of us, the iconic “Acheievement Unlocked” beep triggers many happy childhood memories every time we hear it. Microsoft announced the first real change to Achievement notifications last week, with the Rare Achievement notification. If you’re struggling to hear that sound poop for you, here’s a tip: dust off that Halo: The Master Chief Collection disc and get basting. According to stat tracking experts True … Read More »

Preview Programme members choose to get involved early, providing feedback on new dashboard changes and helping shape the Xbox One experience for everyone. With that comes the expectation that things will be a little more ‘shoogly’ for them than their non preview friends. Preview members expect the occasional crash, weird text and – although rarely – a complete factory reset to get things working again. Comes with the territory. It’s important to remember that every failure and crash is one less failure or crash that’ll occur when the update rolls out to all. And later today – according to Brad … Read More »

We love Titanfall – I mean, guns, explosions, giant robots, guns that aim themselves… what’s not to like? And you’ll see from our hands on at EGX, we are loving Titanfall 2 just as much. Of course, what Titanfall lacked was a coherent single player campaign – a few multi player stages shoved together with a chat track just didn’t cut it. This is a wrong developer Respawn plans to right with Titanfall 2, which features a full stand alone campaign mode. Not much has been said about the campaign, but in the last few minutes Respawn have unleashed a cinematic trailer … Read More »
