With high-power computational processing contained within the next-generation consoles, we’re increasingly celebrating the diversity of computing hardware and software to make contributions to the wider world beyond the game community. For example, in 2005 when the Wii console was unveiled by Nintendo, it heralded a breakthrough in motion-based gaming but the utility of the hardware extended well beyond gaming applications. Dr Johnny Lee (a researcher in computing-human interaction at Google) explored the utility of the Wii remote to serve as an interactive whiteboard and tracking device, something he presented in 2008 in his excellent TED talk. In 2011, Microsoft responded by … Read More »

“Where are the Heroes?”, they ask in the trailers. It’s been 5 years since NBC’s critically acclaimed TV show ‘Heroes’ disappeared from the air. After a hugely successful debut season, the show rapidly began to lose some of its early traction during season 2 and suffered further during the Hollywood writer’s strike as a disappointing and shortened season 3 failed to do much to regain the flailing viewer numbers. Season four continued to lose viewers at a steady pace and despite concluding on a promising cliffhanger that set up an intriguing future direction, it was perhaps unsurprising that NBC were unwilling … Read More »

Since the early days of the initial Xbox console, Halo has stood the test of time and endured as one of the platform’s most successful franchises.  Indeed, the recent buildup of Halo 5 via ‘Hunt the Truth’ and ‘Hunt the Signal’ are excellent indicators of how Microsoft have sought to ramp up the hotly anticipated Q3 release of Halo 5: Guardians. This hasn’t been unique to Halo 5 though, as each previous installment in the Halo series has been met with rapturous anticipation over the years. Increasingly, we’ve witnessed a comprehensive expansion of both the Halo Universe and its associated following, growing … Read More »

They say that our idols are built up to be torn down and there is arguably no better example of that than the story of Tiger Woods. Arguably the most recognisable name in the history of golf (not necessarily always for the right reasons), Woods’ fall from grace has been unrivalled in the history of the sport. Tiger’s troubles are well documented: following his last major win in 2008, his off-course marital dissolution and continued injury woes have witnessed him plummet down the world rankings and all talk of his capabilities to surpass Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 Major wins … Read More »
