A puzzle game with mechs, or a mech game with puzzles? In Ironcast, developers Dreadbit have blended gameplay mechanics, objectives and a great art style to create a balanced, challenging and moreish gem that is easy to learn, hard to master and offers many paths to fun! Ironcast has a straight-to-the-point campaign in which the player picks their battles from a set of options that change after each victory. The narrative leads through daily mech deployments towards a boss encoutner. This meta-game offers up a range of difficulties in the preparatory match ups and, logically, a range of rewards for victory. It feels like … Read More »

Winter is coming! This time to Tamriel! After battling in the streets of the Imperial City (click HERE for the Imperial City DLC Review and HERE for the ESO review) in the first DLC we now take to the West and lend a hand to the Orcs! As always, this DLC will come free to ESO plus subscribers or 3000 crowns (approx. £20) to others. Previously I was critical of the Imperial City expansion’s high level requirement to progress and I am overjoyed to see that a balance has been struck in the new Orsinium expansion that allows my level … Read More »

It’s upgrade time! If you are anything like me, an opportunity to review the latest capture card by gaming hardware giants Elgato is enough to send you into a frenzy, and boy I have been in a frenzy of epic proportions! Back at the end of December 2014 I upgraded my streaming equipment to incorporate the very impressive HD60 which allows streaming and recording of game content at 1080p and 60 frames a second. This previous card is still in high demand and for good reason, it maintains a highly competitive position in the market of external capture cards. Here … Read More »

Escaping from jail is no mean feat and The Escapists brought into sharp focus the strictly regimented routine of prison life with the underhanded thrifty nature of acquiring and crafting tools to break out, all while under the gaze of heavy handed guards. You could buy, sell or gift between prisoners and guards to forge alliances; increase your crafting ability, health and speed with gym and mental activities, making this simple game much deeper than it first appears. How then does a crossover with The Walking Dead retain the core elements and celebrate the narrative of the show? I would … Read More »

If Blood Bowl passed you by, you are not alone. The first I heard about this series was the opportunity to review this instalment. I do have a friend who is quite the fan though, and from what I pieced together from his drooling over the game and the website blurb, is as follows: Blood Bowl and now Blood Bowl 2 are adaptations of the table top Games Workshop version by the same name. You’ll know Games Workshop as the company behind Warhammer. Paint ’em, play with ’em, lose your teen hours and money to them. Well, Blood Bowl has … Read More »

If you count yourself lucky enough to have been taking in by the fantastic Elder Scrolls Online (previously reviewed in full here), you should be aware by now that the first expansion, the Imperial City has been released for 2500 crowns (approx. £16) or free to monthly subscribers on the in game store. For many, the decision to expand the game is a given, for my sins (or the graces of being a review), I have put in less hours than I would have liked on this great game, and so the Imperial City has so far chewed me up … Read More »

Metal Gear Solid still sits proudly on my shelf, having reigned supreme as my favourite game on the Playstation. I last completed it in January 2010, in one sitting, no skipped cutscenes or comms and no saves. It was a glorious 12 hours that was witnessed by friends, both gamers and non-gamers, in a tiny university accommodation room after a particularly boozy night before. There was no better (or worse) way to finish the game than to have the final cutscene, which was real video footage rather than game rendered, crash the Playstation 2 I was playing on. To me, … Read More »

What more is there to love than Quests and Dungeons all in one game! If you made a small excited sound at the first word that only got higher in pitch and volume by the second word, this one might be for you. Let’s throw some other terms and see if you faint with excitement. Class based characters: A Warrior, Wizard, Assassin (archer) and Shaman. No nonsense turn based combat. 8 Bit graphics akin to The Escapists, Gameboy Zelda or similar. Items, doors, keys, loot, vendors, bosses and more! If you haven’t had a nerd overdose yet, keep reading and … Read More »
