Yet Another Zombie Defense HD Review
Yet Another Zombie Defense HD is a remake that no one asked for and no one needs. This a remake of an indie title that was released onto the Xbox 360. The zombie genre, some might say, has become tired and overused so the one real question we have for this game is, why? Why make a remake of a game that very few people have heard of in a genre that seems to have had it’s day?
This is a twin stick shooter that does have a few interesting mechanics. As you play you earn money, you then use this money to buy defenses to keep the hordes at bay. Each level is described as a night and in the in between stages, the days, is when you get to build your defenses. The cost of such defenses vary wildly and they can get very costly so you have to be economic with your money if you want to progress very far in the game. You can also use this money to buy better weapons and ammunition but once again, these can get expensive. You can buy turrets for example but you have to be careful with this kind of defense, if the turret uses the same kind of ammunition as your gun you will find that your weapon ammo is depleting as the turret fires which can leave you in trouble.
There are several different game modes in Yet Another Zombie Defense HD, defense, endless and deathmatch. Defense is what you might call the campaign, the main game. There isn’t anything like a story here, just wave after wave of zombies. Here is where you get the day night cycles and with each round the zombies get tougher. You also gain skill points to improve your character. You might be able to move faster or have extra health for example. Endless is just a constant stream of zombies chasing you and they drop weapons and power-ups for you to use. Finally there is death match which see’s you going head to head with other players all while fighting of the hordes of the undead.
Coop is a big part of this game and this is where we ran into our biggest issues with the game. Firstly, if you play online with strangers controlling the economy becomes difficult. You will be saving for better defenses and suddenly find that your money has gone because someone has bought a better weapon or something. In our opinion it would have been much better to give players there own money that they can spend on what they like. This means that the game has an added difficulty level if you are playing with people you don’t know or are not communicating with. We found that local multiplayer is the best way to go here and if we’re honest, the only real way to make the game fun.
Another massive issue we had was with the player base. When we played there seemed to be very few people playing and it was incredibly difficult to get into games with people. Maybe this will improve in the weeks and months after launch, but only time will tell. On a couple of occasions when we did manage to get into games with strangers the game simply crashed, freezing at the very start of the game meaning that we needed to restart the game completely.
There are four different characters for you to choose from but unfortunately your choices don’t really make a difference. Your character choice is only a skin choice. It would have been nice if there was a different in the stats to the different characters as this would have added a new element to the coop play.
Visually the game isn’t exceptional. It is a top down game meaning that you don’t get to see much of the details and but there is a lot of variants in the appearance of the zombies which is something nice. This been said, the zombies, and you, can sometimes look a little squared and they don’t move in the smoothest of ways. The background always stays the same, a grey floor with a lamppost on it, not the most imaginative of looks.
Yet Another Zombie Defense HD is a game that does nothing to really break the mold. It has an interesting mechanic in the building of defenses that only really feels like it works when you’re playing on your own or with friends due to the issues we spoke about previously with the economy.
You can download Yet Another Zombie Defense HD from the Xbox Store for £3.99 and this is really it’s only saving grace. If you’ve got some friends round and want to play a coop twin stick shooter then maybe give this a go, it might entertain you for twenty minutes or so.
