Is UFC 3 Pay To Win?

For the past few months one of the big controversies that has engulfed the gaming industry is the one surrounding micro transactions and loot boxes. One of the biggest developers to find themselves embroiled in this is EA, especially with their latest shooter Star Wars Battlefront 2. This game has been slated as having a pay to win mechanic. So much so that the developer changed how this mechanic works after launch.

Now it seems like EA have managed to get themselves into another controversy of the same vein. There is currently a beta available for the upcoming UFC 3 game. Unfortunately for EA the main talking point to come from this beta is about whether or not it features a pay to win mechanic of its own.

The controversy surrounds the online Ultimate Team mode. In this mode you create a squad of five fighters and train them up by opening packs of random cards. These cards will give you better moves or more power for example. There are two ways that you can buy these packs, you can either use the in-game currency or real world money to buy more packs. This means that if you have the money to throw at the game then you can progress much faster than if you just grind your way through the game to build up your fighters. It must be noted that not buying packs won’t hinder your progress through the game, it will just take you much longer. The real controversy here comes from the fact that you will be competing against one another online meaning that those with the money could have a slightly unfair advantage over those unwilling to pay more cash than the entrance fee for the game.

What do you think about this. Is this really a pay to win mechanic or just a way for EA to make some easy extra cash? Let us know in the comments section below.
