Volition Hit By Massive Layoffs

Last month Agents of Mayhem was released (you can read our review here) and it seems like it has spelt trouble for the developer Volition. It turns out that this week they have had to lay off over 30 people.

There has been no official word from from their parent company, Deep Silver but apparently they have been unhappy with the low sales of Agents of Mayhem. It is believed that they expected the game to be a big hit due to the success of the Saints Row series. Agents of Mayhem is set in the same universe as the Saints Row games and even features Johnny Gat.

Volition has been a staple of the industry since it was founded in 1996. These layoffs seem to paint a bad picture for the future of the developer. The layoffs include the general manager Dan Cermak. Hopefully this is merely a restructuring of the business but we have seen this kind of thing before and it doesn’t look good.

Volition have been responsible for several large franchises in the past including Red Faction and Saints Row. If this developer were to disappear it would be a great loss for the industry.
