Conan Exiles (Game Preview)
In an era where we’re inundated with survival-based video games, you need to bring something new to the table to lure in fans of the genre. Sparking much controversy, the game features nudity, allowing you to set your bust or endowment size, although the review copy censors the lower genitals with trusty underpants. Shame, but it’s not a deciding factor. Will Conan Exiles survive long enough to succeed?
Currently in the Game Preview program, Conan Exiles sees you creating your male or female character, completely customising facial attributes, and even go so far as to providing them with a religion for them to follow, if you wish. Giving them faith is essentially giving you advantages and disadvantages in particular areas such as survivabity or endurance.
Before you start a game, you have the option of starting from scratch, landing you in some sort of story mode, or you can choose to go online and join a server with a wealth of options available to you, essentially allowing you to get stuck in with a pimped out settler in an already-civilised server.
Conan Exiles blends survival with plenty of RPG elements, allowing you to continuously beef up your dude or dudette, increasing their stat points of your choosing every time you level up. Of course, as with all games of the genre, the survival side of things is first and foremost. You’re required to manage all aspects of, well, living basically. Food, water, stamina, health and even over-heating are all things for you to micro-manage. Hunt for food, whether it be sea life, beasts and animals that roam the land, or even be a cannibal and eat who you kill. Finding shady areas in order not to faint from heat-exhaustion or cool down in ponds and lakes – as well as providing you with fresh source of water to drink. There’s plenty for you to discover and learn.
Conan Exiles seems overwhelming to begin with, shoving a lot of information into your HUD, but if you start from scratch, helpful tutorial pointers guide you on what you need to do next and gives you a vague idea on where to go. However, this is not an easy title, and if you’re a newcomer to the genre, you may struggle to get your bearings, This looks like it’s primarily aimed at players who are used to survival games, but as previously stated, it does help ease you in, but a lot of patience is needed.
There are a few kinks that need ironing out, but this is in Game Preview after all, and therefore, providing feedback to the developers is highly rrecommended. If you’re looking for something new to the genre, this title has it, but at the same time, it’s still a survival game and works the same way as most other survival games. You just gotta survive.
Conan Exiles is currently in the Game Preview program and can be downloaded from the Xbox Store, surviving at a price of £30.79.
