Sledgehammer Drop Big Hints About The Next Call of Duty Game

We’re two days into 2017, that means there are some great titles just over the horizon for gamers. One game that will be sure to grab a lot of attention will be Sledgehammer Games’ latest contribution to the Call of Duty franchise.

While not much is known about the title as of yet, the gaming community have been full of assumptions. Many feel that Sledgehammer will learn from what many see as mistakes made by Infinity Ward.

It is widely believed that Sledghammer will drag the Call of Duty kicking and screaming away from it’s current futuristic settings, adopting a more historical approach that has been the premise for many of Call of Duty’s most successful titles.

The rumors that the era that Call of Duty is set in is due to change have been further fuelled by Tweets from Sledgehammer. The initial Tweet came from Sledgehammer Games co-founder & Head of Development, Michael Condrey, on Christmas day.

The image is a simple e-Christmas card that seems to feature an image of the classic M1911 pistol, a gun that has come to be a mainstay of many shooter games since the dawn of modern gaming.

While that is enough on its own to send the rumour mills into over drive, an image followed on New Year’s day from the official Sledgehammer Games account that further fuelled the fires of assumption.

The “Zodiac year of the Hammer” quote along with the ticker counting to 2017 and working cogs seem to conjure up images of the code breaking equipment used to decode the German Enigma code during World War II. This could provide further clues as to where the Call of Duty franchise is heading.

Should Sledgehammer opt to revamp the series then it wouldn’t be at all unexpected and nobody could really blame them. Especially considering the success of the latest DICE title Battlefield 1, which took a step away from the modern combat of Battlefield 4 to go back in time to the horrors of World War I.

What would you like to see from the next Call of Duty game? Should it step back in time to a World War II or perhaps even the much rumoured Vietnam war setting?

Should it try to capitalise on the success of the Modern Warfare Remaster and stick to that era? Or should they stick to the futuristic themes and hope they can make it succeed?
