Backwards Compatible Xbox 360 games get Xbox One boxes
Its been a year since Microsoft introduced Backwards Compatibility to the Xbox One. Since its launch in November 2015, this experience has become one of the most popular features and many Xbox fans have been enjoying the opportunity to play Xbox 360 games on their Xbox One.
Backwards Compatibility is a huge marketing point over Sony’s PS4 for the Xbox One with nearly 300 titles added and now Microsoft are looking to highlight this capability at the retailers.
Certain Backwards Compatible Xbox 360 games are now shipping in Xbox One cases that list both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 where normally we see just the former. Not only does the box have dual Xbox system logos, the box art also has new text indicating that the game ‘plays on Xbox One and Xbox 360’. In small print near the bottom, it does state that the game will download to the Xbox One and that performance will be the same as the Xbox 360. This however is something that those of us who have already used our Xbox 360 discs to play these games on our Xbox One are familiar with.
Microsoft’s are clearly highlighting one of the Xbox Ones biggest and most popular features, that a lot of your old games are going to work if you upgrade to the new console. Its also a great way to highlight which games will work if you already have an Xbox One without needing to check a list – not always easy when out shopping.
Whilst this maybe a smart and subtle marketing strategy, it also means that the smaller cases of your new Xbox 360 backwards compatible purchases will now fit in perfectly on the shelf with your Xbox One library.
