We love Titanfall 2 – it’s one of our Games of the Year to be sure and, on balance, we think it’s the best of the three ‘big name’ shooters released in recently, trouncing Infinite Warfare and edging out the superb Battlefield 1. We think it has the quality to stand in the ring and slug it out in such a packed release window – but it seems not everyone has that faith, and we’ve previously reported on its disappointing sales.
In a recent interview with Glixel, Respawn supremo and straight-talker Vince Zamparella stated that it’s not a guarantee that more Titanfall will be forthcoming from the studio – though it’s ‘safe to assume’ they will explore more of that universe. When asked if Respawn were to make a third game in the series, Zamparella had this to say:
“We don’t know yet. The game is, critically, a huge success. We’re really happy with all the reviews and the positive sentiment. Sales, it’s too early to tell. We’d definitely like to tell more of the story and the universe. I think it’s pretty safe to assume that we’ll explore more of it.”

We’ve ruminated on the reason for EA deciding to set two of its own shooters head to head in the ring, releasing Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 so close together. Undoubtedly, that will have hurt sales. Titanfall 2 is the better, and better value, game but Battlefield is a big daddy shooter and has not only lots of grass-roots support but the recognition that a return to boots-on-the-ground shooters is welcomed by a community tired of future war and jetpacks.
It’s clear, though, there are signs of a rift between Respawn and publisher Electronic Arts. When EA publicist Devin Bennett stated that the publisher remained committed to the franchise, Zaparella growled, “So, whatever the f*** that means.”
So, although the future’s by no means certain, we’re rooting for greater exploration of Titanfall’s universe, and hoping that its positive critical reception, including that of Xbox One UK, sends a clear message that Titanfall 3 would be welcomed.
