How Activision is Purposely Giving the Middle Finger to Fans

We all know how the Call of Duty franchise works.  November comes around and one of the now three developers puts out the latest Call of Duty game.  We see many different variations of the game sold, bundled with knick knacks and other cool toys that appeal to the most hardcore of fans.  They are great side items and usually accent a part of the new main game.  But what if the gamers would rather just have the add on instead of the actual game?

One of our editors, Brian, spoke yesterday about how Activision is bundling its next game and I got upset about it.  It’s very well written and you can read it by clicking here.  Let us setup the situation in case you have no idea what we are getting at.  A couple months back we learned about Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.  Fans of the CoD series have been very vocal on how they were tired of the boost jumps and wall running and wish to go back to traditional boots on the ground.  Infinite Warfare showed that this would not be the case and Activision and Infinity Ward would be in fact pushing the envelope further and putting players in space even.  Fans were outraged and the YouTube video posted by Activision for the first trailer became the most disliked gaming video in YouTube history!  The video posted just 5 months ago already has over 3,200,000 dislikes.

Infinite Warfare

As someone very familiarized with the game design process, the outcry for a traditional boots on the ground style Call of Duty game started about a year and a half ago.  At that point, Infinity Ward would have already been over a year into development for Infinite Warfare so it would be almost impossible to throw it all away and start fresh and still make this November’s deadline.  Unfortunately they are still going to have to take the heat for this game.  But how can they get through this dilemma and make the fans excited for Infinite Warfare?

A short time after the initial backlash, it was announced that fans were finally getting something they were dying to have – Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered.  The game that started the huge multiplayer scene that we know of today.  Activision isn’t an idiot.  They knew this was a way they could get players excited over Infinite Warfare.  They then bundled the MW Remastered as a special addition for Infinite Warfare.  This helps create excitement and will surely push units for Infinite Warfare.  I had no problem with and then weighed in if I wanted to just get Infinite Warfare so I could also have MW Remastered.  But then Activision showed their true colors on how much they care about CoD fans.

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare

It was then discovered that a disclaimer stated that the disc had to be inserted to play MW: Remastered.  We all knew MW Remastered was a digital download so it must mean IW must be inserted to play MW: Remastered.  Activision is so concerned with people selling and trading in Infinite Warfare and keeping MW: Remastered that they made it mandatory that you have to keep a game you might not want.  You may think its no big deal.  To me it sounds like Activision and Infinity Ward are not confident in the product they made they needed to find a way to force you to have it.

Yes, Modern Warfare: Remastered is a “bonus” item but this isn’t just a bonus item in the eyes of fans.  There wasn’t anywhere near this much hype for a mini fridge, night vision goggles, or an RC car.  This is a part of a lot of gamers past loves that Activision wants to take advantage of by pushing a poorly received and possibly underachieving product.  We won’t know for sure how good Infinite Warfare will be until closer to launch but this isn’t giving a lot of people a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I for one am not going to be purchasing Infinite Warfare for the fact that I believe Activision is trying to push a poor quality Call of Duty game by hiding it behind MW: Remastered.  If you feel that what Activision is doing is wrong, you shouldn’t purchase it either.  By purchasing the Legacy edition solely for MW: Remastered – you are telling Activision that it is okay what they are doing.  Hopefully they will be selling Modern Warfare: Remastered as a solo game at some point.  We actually have reason to believe that which you can read here – Modern Warfare Sold Individually.

Are you going to be purchasing the Legacy edition of Infinite Warfare?  How do you feel about having to keep Infinite Warfare to play MW: Remastered.  Let us know in the comment section below!

  1. I’ve pre ordered the Legacy Edition. No regrets and can’t wait for release. If people aren’t happy, then don’t buy the game.

All this under handed tactics is ruining the gaming industry. With the consumer (us gamers) playing into their hands.we preorder everything, remember we literally fund them. When we aren’t happy we have vote with our feet. We need to NOT buy the products. Why can’t the consumer grasp the nettle and avoid getting sucked into these crappy marketing ploys? Until we all do that, we will never be looked at as a respectable sector in the entertainment industry. Gamers, we need to unite!!!

  4. after 7 years I’m not buying cod at all this year.

Completely agree with the article. I feel like it’s an exclusive bundle to sell IW on the legacy of CoD4 while locking out…

Ill wait for its separate release, it has all ready been hinted at by the remasters studio lead.
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is probably getting a standalone
release according to David Pelas , Director of Raven Software. During
an interview with Gamereactor, Pelas said: “What
we announced before today was that we were going to offer 10 maps on
launch, and that’s still true. The announcement today is that the six
remaining maps we are actually going to be delivering to anyone who
purchases Modern Warfare Remastered, anyone who owns it or a version of
Infinite Warfare that comes with it, they’re going to get all 16 of the
    maps for no additional cost.”
