We’ve all seen the trailers, we’ve all anguished long and hard over the musical accompaniment, but now Gears 4 is almost with us, and we’ve been hands on with an early mission in the single player mode.
First impressions are very strong. It feels like Gears, reassuringly – though some might say disappointingly – so. But, as befits the new generation, it feels improved. Fighting alongside fellow Gears, we’re immediately faced by a Locust foe that’s smarter and more aggressive than before.
This time round, the Locust are more organised, better at using fields of fire to isolate and take down Gears who find themselves out of cover. Mistakes are punished quickly and brutally.
Today’s hands on was running on high end PCs so we’ll save the abundant praise for tomorrow and our hands on with the game on Xbox One S. As an observer, though, Gears looks absolutely gorgeous on both platforms.
