Prepare to be scared in HDR on Xbox One S…

According to Capcom, Resident Evil 7 will be enhanced with HDR support on Xbox One S.

According to Capcom, “with HDR support on the Xbox One S, players can enjoy game-play in Full HD that offers realism that can almost be felt.”

HDR offers a wider choice of colours and a greater contrast ratio. HDR is best used in situations where you have very bright and very dark areas in the same frame, like a candle in a dark room, and so should help give more depth to the image with more detail to the dark areas.

Resident Evil 7 is the eleventh main game in the franchise but the first main game to be played from the first person perspective. According to Capcom, the shift to first person was to ‘dramatically increase your ability to become fully absorbed in the world they have created’.

Capcom are using the RE Engine, which was specifically designed with the development of Resident Evil 7 in mind.

“With this engine, we can produce photorealistic results and display objects of various textures, right down to the smallest of details. Resident Evil 7 is only the first step on the path to creating more photorealistic games and immersive worlds.”

Whilst we can’t show you exactly how it would look when enhanced by HDR, the official screenshot below does give an indication of how good the game is looking maybe help to see how HDR could improve this image.

The Survival Horror game takes place after the events of Resident Evil 6 and features new protagonist, Ethan, who is on the search for his missing wife. This leads him to the home of the strange Baker family – a derelict plantation mansion. Ethan does not have the combat skills of recent Resident Evil main characters (although you will have access to the usual mix of weaponry including pistols, shotguns, flame throwers, explosives and chainsaws) and according to developers, players should not expect a “gun fest”.

Although connections to previous games in the series will be made, the game will feature an entirely new cast of characters. Whilst the game may have switched to a first person perspective, RE7 will also feature the usual puzzle-solving, resource management and healing herbs.

Resident Evil 7 is set for release on January 24, 2017
