Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 6 from Telltale Games is the first of an additional three, largely self contained, episodes for Minecraft Story Mode. Episode 6, “A Portal To Mystery”, starts where Episode 5 ended, and sees Jesse, hero of the first five episodes, return and meet some interesting special guest stars.
Episode 6 takes place in a whole new and alien world – one that has two moons (unusual, even for Minecraft). Jesse, Petra, Ivor, and Lucas find themselves in a graveyard and are immediately beset by a zombie horde. Seeking safety in a nearby mansion, things take a surreal turn as our heroes are joined by a host of YouTubers. Popular Minecraft streamers Stacy Plays, DanTDM, LDShadowLady, CaptainSparklez and StampyCat join the cast, lovingly rendered in block form. It’s a neat twist – tying Telltale’s series more closely into the Minecraft community.
Interestingly, it’s not just their likenesses that have made the leap – all five voice their own characters and do a creditable job, too, and some of their more recognisable characteristics have also made the transition. DanTDM’s hair changes colour throughout the tale, for example.
The tale in question is a murder mystery, a locked-mansion tale that – while hardly Agatha Christie – is modelled on the classic “and the murderer is one of us!” detective tales of the fifties. Jesse, as self-appointed investigator, fulfils every trope of the genre, including cross-examining each of the mansion’s inhabitants in an attempt to catch them in a lie.
Yes, there are a fair few plot-holes but the story zips along at quite a pace and you’ll have such fun Miss Marpling your way to its conclusion you’ll barely raise an eyebrow at the occasional flaw.
While this is a more self-contained adventure – rather than part of a continuing story arc – Episode 6 still maintains the fun, wit and charm of the main storyline. The whimsical nature of the whole concept has never failed to put a smile on our faces, and whilst Episode 6 isn’t as tightly scripted as earlier installments, it’s still tremendously fun.
“A Portal to Mystery” doesn’t quite hit the highs of the main story arc, despite the interesting story possibilities and the inclusion of popular community personalities. The final reveal is a signposted a little too heavy handedly, but overall Episode 6 is still a fun experience that will ensure your jaw is aching from grinning throughout the story.
Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 6 “A Portal to Mystery” is available from the Xbox Store in a number of different bundles – you can by the additional three episodes for £15.99 for the adventure pass, or buy Episode 6 on its own for just £5.19.
Not the finest episode in the series but still a really fun adventure.
Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 6 “A Portal to Mystery” stands alone from the previous five episodes, and takes you on a new and different journey with Jesse and the gang. Whilst this is a largely self-contained story, the surreal appearance of Stacy Plays, StampyCat, et al, we’re itching to see what twists lay ahead in Episodes 8 and 9!
