As noted by user Conflict_NZ on Reddit, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer was a guest on Giant Bomb’s E3 coverage earlier today, and he dropped a rather tasty morsel for us all to mull over regarding backwards compatibility.
The full quote goes a something a little like this:
We actually have some good, I think, announces tomorrow that are coming out on back compat which’ll be cool. I think it’s tomorrow
Now, I’m not usually one to jump aboard the hype train but this time around I’m buying a first class ticket.
This announcement could be anything, it could be something really minor like “You can now play this arcade game that only four people bought but it’s now B/C”. Or it could be something huge, let’s start speculating about the latter.
Getting the obvious out of the way first, Skate 3 has been confirmed as due on backwards compatibility soon. This announcement could be confirmation of the date for that. Not forgetting that EA seem to be all over the B/C programme lately could it be a huge back catalog of EA games?
There’s also the unlikely, which it would be wrong for us not to cover. As much as 90% (totally made up percentage, so don’t quote us on it) of Xbox gamers would like it, it’s unlikely to be Red Dead Redemption. Along those same lines with the E3 reveal of the Skyrim remaster it isn’t likely to be that either.
How about we instead take a look at the hugely speculative option? The eagle eyed among you may have noticed Phil Spencer wore an original Xbox t-shirt during the Microsoft conference at E3. Could this announcement be that the backwards compatibility program is going to extend it’s reach to the extensive library of original Xbox games?
Only time will tell which, if any, of these speculations could be true. What do you think the backwards compatibility announcement will be? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
