Sumo Digital takes over Dead Island 2

Remember Dead Island 2?

It is still in development, but there is still no set release date.  This title was originally going to be developed by Techland, but the tensions between Techland and Deep Silver kept that from happening.

Yager Productions (known for Spec Ops: The Line and upcoming Dreadnought) were the next in line to work on Dead Island 2. That partnership lasted a short while, since in 2015 Deep Silver announced that it was taking Dead Island 2 away from Yager. Apparently there was a difference in vision between both companies.

Today it was announced that Sumo Digital (Little Big Planet 3, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed) will be taking over the project. Sumo COO Paul Porter states,

“It’s an honor to be charged with the evolution of such an important franchise in Deep Silver’s catalogue. We’re looking forward to exceeding fan expectation with an ambitious design that we’re confident will take bone-crunching, visceral, zombie action to a whole new level.”

CEO of Koch Media Dr. Klemens Kundratitz adds,

“Sumo showed so much understanding of the brand, had creative ideas and an excellent vision that was aligned with our own. It just made perfect sense for us to move the project to them. We will reveal more details at a later stage, but for now I’d like to say that we are obviously super excited about the progress that we are making with them.”

I hope that this game blows me away, but my thoughts right now are that it looks like Dead Rising 3. Maybe Sumo Digital will revamp the whole thing, but that depends on a lot of different factors.

Are you guys excited about Sumo Digital taking over? What are your thoughts?
