Could Battlefield 5 be heading back to WWI?

EA (Electronic Arts) released their first Battlefield game in 2002 (Battlefield 1942) and like Call of Duty and Medal of Honor embraced the consumers affinity for the war-based themes of yesteryear. The franchises have becoming ever more recent in the games’ setting with “COD”‘s Modern Warfare set in the not-too-distant future. Although with varying successes, there have now been 14 separate games with the Battlefield title slapped on it and that’s not including the many DLC packs.

However, a new Battlefield game, Battlefield 5, was spotted on a German retailer with the description: “Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter im 1. Weltkrieg” translating into “Multiplayer tactical shooter in WW1”.

We haven’t got too long to wait either with a release date showing platforms including Xbox One set for 26th October 2016. Although there were rumors of their newest upcoming title to the Battlefield series being “military oriented” having the franchise go back to its roots in terms of original World War story-telling is something that will please many of us first-person shooter lovers; the reception so far on Twitter is resoundingly positive .

I don’t know about you, but one of my all-time favorite shooters was Call of Duty 2, set in World War 2, as the stories set in a time and event that shaped the past for so many of us simply increases the ability to entirely submerse me within the game.

Expect a more formal release from EA very soon!

I'm on all things MMO/MOBA, family man, part-time streamer at and on the OfficialXboxOneUk channel too. For me, gaming isn't a hobby or even a passion; it's a way of life. I'm trying to make it even more than that through streams, videos and writing.

not going to happen, it will be modern day or ww2. The lack of equipment and vehicles in ww1 will not work for a battlefield game

From the media channels, there’s certainly a mix of opinion over how futuristic first-person-shooters have become and how it’s more about how agile your thumbs are rather than tactical play.
Many people(myself included but trying to stay impartial!) love the World War scenes and as WWI hasn’t been touched for a while by a Triple A franchise, would be fresh in a different way – otherwise, there’s going to be lasers!
