Since backwards compatibility landed on the Xbox One earlier this month we have been enjoying revisiting our pasts and replaying some of the Xbox 360 classics now available on the Backwards compatibility scheme. For some people however this isn’t quite enough and they want to go further back, they want to be able to play their games from the original Xbox on their Xbox One.
Before backwards compatibility launched Phil Spencer talked about the possibility of getting original Xbox games to run on the Xbox One but said that before they attempted that they would get the 360 emulator to work first. In a podcast Xbox and Windows Platform Director of Program Management Mike Ybarra shed a little more light on the possibility of getting backwards compatibility to go further back.
“We’re not looking at original Xbox games on Xbox One yet, and right now the focus is making more 360 games work, but I would say that nothing is impossible. Certainly, it would be very challenging. getting 360 to work was incredibly challenging, and really a multi-year engineering investment going all the way back to the original [Xbox] certainly would challenge the team. We’re fortunate enough to have a great back compat engineering team, who loves to take on challenges, and I’m sure they would love that one as an opportunity to go look at.”
So no confirmation yet on whether we’ll be enjoying our original Xbox games on our Xbox Ones just yet but we can hope and if we’re very lucky the Xbox team will crack it very soon.
