The UBS Global Technology Conference in San Francisco happened today, and EA were there to talk over the Star Wars deal they have with Disney. EA’s CFO Blake Joregensen explained about the 10 year licensing deal they have with them and how it will result in multiple Battlefront games, as well as other star wars based titles and genres.
“It’s a big effort for us, and I don’t think there’s a human being in the world who hasn’t heard of the Star Wars movie coming, it’s a great opportunity. We struck a licensing deal with Disney a few years back that’s almost ten years in length. The game that comes out tomorrow, Star Wars Battlefront, is a traditional first-person style shooter game. Our goal is to make future Battlefront games as well as other style games around the Star Wars franchise, both on mobile as well as console and PC. It’s a huge opportunity for us.”
During the interview it was also confirmed that the deal doesn’t just cover Star Wars films (all 6) but it will also include The Force Awakens and any other upcoming games in the series based around the star wars universe. Blake Joregensen stated however that ‘Our goal is not to make video games directly about the movies’
Disney however do have 1 major stipulation and its a fair one to be honest: EA must adhere to the franchises already established fiction. So although EA have the power to side step away from the main film branch, they cant go to far away and re-create a whole new story; like the time Lucas Arts added Qui-Gon Jinn into the already pre set story line….ive still no idea why they did that! Jorgensen described the new partnership between EA and Disney’s “one of the best its ever seen”,
10 years is a long time, especially in the gaming world, where styles of game produced change frequently and the general game/console technology moves on at an alarming rate. I wonder what they will produce in that time, Battlefront 2 is almost guaranteed, why stop there when its already so popular. Ill finish off with this from jorgensen:
“The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is it’s almost unlimited in what you can do with it”
Well EA, lets see what you can do!
