Halo 5: Feature-packed Free DLC drops next week

Halo 5: Guardians

It seems like Halo 5: Guardians has been out for all of five minutes, but as we teased last week already the first major multiplayer DLC is about to drop. Our friends over at 343 Industries just want to keep us hooked on that sweet, sweet multiplayer it seems. Best of all, as promised before launch, all Halo 5 DLC is free (softening that microtransaction blow a little.)

Battle of Shadow and Light brings two new armour sets – Shinobi and Tracer – and over 50 new Reqs, including weapons, weapon skins, vehicles, and a new assassination. The Req levels range from Common all the way through to Legendary. You want a woodland-camo Scorpion? You got it.

Most anticipated of all is the return of Big Team Battle, an 8 vs 8 mode across four new maps: Deadlock, Basin, Guillotine, and Recurve. This legendary mode, missing from the game at launch, was always planned for one of the first DLC drops. The Basin map in particular is getting the community excited, as it’s the sixth revision of one of the most popular Halo maps of all time – Blood Gulch from Halo: Combat Evolved.

Battle of Shadow and Light

As confirmed in Episode 3 of season 3 of The Sprint – Halo’s making of documentary available on the Halo Channel – all the Big Team Battle maps have been built using Forge, Halo’s map editor. Forge will make its Halo 5 debut for everyone in December.

Battle of Shadow and Light drops next week, Spartans! Be ready!

Our take: Big Team Battle could become one of the most popular game modes – a little more focussed than the excellent Warzone for competitive play, but not as intimidating as four vs four for the slightly-below-average player (i.e. me). The return of Blood Gulch (as Basin) will no doubt bring back happy memories for many Halo veterans out there.

It looks like 343 Industries are working really hard to keep the player base engaged – free DLC for all eliminates the fracturing of multiplayer into the haves and have nots (we’re looking at you, Halo 4) and keeps the playlists populated. Hopefully 343i can keep the updates coming and keep people playing for many months down the line.

Oh, and Basin’s lineage? Blood Gulch (Halo: CE), Coagulation (Halo 2), Blood Gulch (Halo Wars), Valhalla (Halo 3), Hemmorhage (Halo Reach), Bloodline (Halo 2: Anniversary) and Ragnarok (Halo 4).
