id Software and Bethesda Studios have unveiled a sign-up page for the DOOM multiplayer closed Alpha, allowing eager fans to get an early taste of the game while assisting the developers in testing the server infrastructure.
What can you expect in the Alpha? The action will take place on one map, “Heatwave”, described as “industrial-themed” and “an arena setting featuring plenty of armor, ammo, and health pickups. Narrow corridors, walkways and small chambers all link to a central, open area of the map, providing players with a variety of environments that suit varying playstyles, as well as the focus point for fighting over key power-ups.” A design as you’d expect, really, but one that should engender intense action.
There will be one game mode: 6v6 Team Deathmatch. It’s your standard team deathmatch for the most part, however teams will gain advantage over their enemies by securing the “Revenant” and “Gauss Rifle” power-ups. What are the Revenant and Gauss Rife power-ups?
By snatching the Demon Rune before any other players you’ll be transformed into the Revenant, a creature equipped with a jetpack and dual rocket launchers that will give you a time-limited advantage to press home a victory or make a resurgence.
The Gauss Cannon is the bane of the Revenant, a high-powered weapon that annihilates anything in a single blast. The weapon features an alternate fire mode that allows the wielder to see enemies through walls, though focusing on taking down the Revenant demon is advised over using the Rifle for regular enemies due to the limited ammunition. Once it’s dry you’ll need to wait for it to respawn on the map once more.
Other weapons and equipment will be available in the Alpha, a sample of what to expect from the full game.
- Vortex Rifle
- Super Shotgun
- Rocket Launcher
- Static Cannon
- Plasma Rifle
- Personal Teleporter
- Frag Grenade
Take note that this alpha is separate from the beta that will be available at an unspecified time to those who pre-ordered or bought Wolfenstein: The New Order before or on 26th May, 2014.
