WRC 5 to become a eSport

The new World Rally Championship game is set to become an eSport in 2016. Yes, from the start of the official 2016 WRC season in January, competitive gamers will take part in their own championship using WRC 5, which is set for release on 16 October.

The competition will run online at the same time as each round in the 2016 season, so as the likes of Sebastien Ogier and Andreas Mikkelsen race in the Monte Carlo Rally, the best WRC 5 players will be doing the same in the new game.

There aren’t many big driving games on the eSports circuit, but racing fans will soon be able to follow the best virtual rally drivers on Twitch as they race online during the season, before they compete in a big live battle for the final round of the 2016 season.

WRC 5 publishers Bigben Interactive, ESL – the world’s largest eSports company – and the WRC are working together to turn the new game into a successful eSport. WRC Promoter Managing Director Oliver Cielsa is hopeful that the new tournament will bring the excitement of the World Rally Championship to a new audience.

“New technology has brought an extra dimension to the way in which people can engage with WRC,” said Cielsa. “We’re proud of the ground-breaking digital initiatives we’ve introduced to allow fans to follow WRC when, where and how they choose. Our partnership with Bigben Interactive for the 2016 eSports WRC Championship is the latest example of this, and we look forward to revealing more details to our gaming fans in the coming weeks.”

WRC5 is readying for release on 16th October in the UK.
