Skylanders Superchargers Review
Skylanders is back and better then ever before in my eyes. I have a lot of respect for this game, the game that pioneered the idea of using real toys to bring digital characters to real life way before Disney Infinity and the newest game on the market Lego Dimensions. Luckily enough I’ve played all three titles this year and Skylanders Superchargers is my favourite of the lot. Publisher Activision needed this to be good due to the massive competition and I feel they have it spot on. What’s the difference this year you might be asking? Well it’s simply vehicles, vehicles… and did I mention vehicles? It’s the best and most important new feature in the series’ four-year history: fans with some need for speed in them should look no further.
So let’s talk vehicles. There are three types of vehicles in this newest game: the first being land, the second being sea, and the third being air – each of which you’ll need to get the most from this title.
- Land: Stunt, skid, and drift while driving and experiencing high octane combat
- Sea: Explore underwater seas, race down roaring rapids and ride the surf and waves
- Sky: Engage in aerial dogfighting and enjoy freedom of flight with 360 degrees of control
There are a lot of Vehicles to pick from but here are my three favourites from each class.
Meet Shark Tank – He’s a Land Vehicle and looks like something out of Robot Wars.
The Shark Tank is an unstoppable driving force when Terrafin is at the helm. Containing subterranean navigation, all-terrain teeth tread, and enchanted battle armor, it is primed and ready to take the bite to Kaos.
Next up is Stealth Stinger – He’s an Air Vehicle and credit to the design team on this one!
The Stealth Stinger is the ultimate forest ninja weapon! During covert Skylander operations, Stealth Elf uses its camouflage abilities and high velocity thorn rockets to get the drop on evil before they see it coming!
Now let me tell you about Dive Bomber – He’s a Sea Vehicle. I know you would have never guessed that!
The Dive Bomber is a heavy duty aquatic battle tank! With enchanted metal plating capable of withstanding the immense pressure of the deep ocean, evil has nowhere to hide when Dive-Clops is in pursuit!
Ohhh nooo! Skylands is in peril! Okay, maybe not… Okay, I’m sorry. It really is… Kaos has unleashed his most evil weapon yet: the Doomstation of Ultimate Doomstruction. Yikes to say the least! With all of Skylands on the verge of collapse a special team called the “SuperChargers” has been assembled to pilot an unstoppable fleet of incredible vehicles. Now you – only you – and the SuperChargers must embark on crazy and epic adventures over land, under sea, and through the sky to stop Kaos and save the Skylands once again!
The game delivers a dynamic and story-driven gameplay experience. Like the previous titles this one is filled with vehicle-based and on-foot adventure, complete with combat, puzzles and mini games activities. I found the co-op so much fun with my kids: one of us driving and another shooting pretty much anything I or they could see. The levels are fantastic and really keep you wanting to play more; the maps unfold like regular Skylanders maps have in the past. Plus there is loads more this time around because, as mentioned, SuperChargers introduces 20 new SuperChargers toys for all of the fans. You can explore the game like never before by going behind the wheel of powerful, tricked-out vehicles. SuperChargers also has the ability to customize vehicles and it’s so much fun with super cool modifications and upgradeable weapons. For example, as you travel throughout the game you can discover hidden mods such as a volcanic booster engine that spews lava rocks and jet wings with feathers made of gold.
Graphically the game is perfect. It’s a small improvement from Swap Force as you’ll see from the video below; it’s everything you would expect for this type of game – you don’t need any more. The sound of the cars and characters that you use throughout the levels are again what you would expect from a Skylanders title.
Remember if you’re a previous Skylander fan! Skylanders SuperChargers is forward compatible with all 300+ unique toys from all previous games such as Skylanders SWAP Force, Skylanders Giants, Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure and Skylanders Trap Team.
