The Future Of Destiny

Destiny is a title I can happily say I have lived and loved since its release last year, I know that thought is shared by millions of console users around the world! The question on all our minds is where is this epic world of Destiny going? Is the future for your Guardians to explore not just our own galaxy but to find new ones (Cue Star Trek intro) so this leads me to ask really what’s the future of Destiny and the Guardians you have created and worked hard to be the toughest kids on the block?

You can only ever find an ending to a tale if we start at the beginning! (kind of) Destiny is an ever expanding universe of dangerous and powerful enemies looking take over and consume all life. so what do we really know about this epic universe?

When you first start the game you are introduced to the Traveller a powerful being of light that protects life or so we have been told by The Speaker (who really trusts a guy wearing a mask?) from the all powerful Darkness, legend says “The Traveller sacrificed itself to save us” now that’s a pretty powerful message, A mysterious city sized sphere that hangs above earth sacrificed its self to save us from the Darkness (another mysterious entity) seems all very mysterious if you ask me!! This is what we know so far:

The Traveler’s origins are unknown. When it arrived, humanity first discovered it on Mars. It sparked a Golden Age of humanity that allowed Humans to migrate from Earth to colonize other planets within the Solar System. Some speculate that the Traveler is a large vessel; others believe that it is a sentient being or artificial intelligence and some may even consider it a deity. As of yet its true nature is unknown. The Traveler is credited with humanity’s survival during the Collapse of the Golden Age. After the Traveler sacrificed itself to save humanity, it remained in low orbit over the Earth, and became silent and dormant. The City was built in its shadow and under its protection, where its inhabitants are temporarily safe from the threat of the Darkness.

Temporarily protected to me just sounds like it could hit the fan any minute! most of you guys have already worked your way through the “storyline” and have done your hard grind to the light level cap already like myself (congrats by the way) and some of you haven’t (keep going) so for all you guys that have experienced the story you will know 2 things

1. Bungie have started to tell you an epic tale of light and dark fighting to protect or control all life and the universe

2. They have decided to tell you a tale in a very fragmented and different way

This is a very unfortunate thing, not because they are trying to tell you a tale that is as epic and fantastic as some of the greats (star wars/Middle Earth) that’s bursting at the seems with lore and fantasy but more that alot of the information and out right beauty of Destiny has been missed because Bungie have decided to tell you this tale for now holding all the cards very close to their chest in a way we have never seen before! All movies and games play out in the same way, there is a beginning a middle and an end, some films and games with sequels will generally lead on from where they left of with the obvious twists and turns through out while giving you all the plot to guide you through the story to the end, Destiny does not.

Destiny shows you what is relevant to start your guardian without piling on all the information and giving you too much to soon (bread crumbs) but in this lies the beauty of Bungies way of telling you Destiny’s story because not only do you have to grind Destiny’s gameplay but you have to grind the story also, we have alot more to come from Destiny’s story. There are nods everywhere to the future, when you take on the Archon Priest on Venus it explains in the intro that the Archon Priest has been taken by the House Of Winter from the Prison Of Elders which we now know is an arena based event from the up and coming House Of Wolves DLC (full details this Wednesday on Twitch) so from very early on Destiny is giving you little bites of what’s to come and I for one am very excited to see what the twists and turns of this story really is!

We know what is and what could be from our favourite game but most of us also know there is alot more DLC to come going forwards, there was a leek not too long ago detailing some possibly really interesting new material that is planned and one such DLC is named Comet

Based on this picture we know that Bungie has some really big plans coming up for Destiny’s future (slightly excited) and with Comet you can see that is 4 times bigger than any other DLC we have had so far! 12 new missions, 4 Strikes, 1 Public Event, 1 Patrol, 1 Raid and 6 PvP maps!! If this info is accurate then we are in for some massive changes to Destiny and not just from a physical standpoint but from a story stand point also, the information is VERY limited currently but lets focus on what we know.

Comet is a huge DLC with a tag line of Plague of Darkness so for me this automatically takes me back to the original story of the Traveler at war with The Darkness, does this mean you will have to finally fight back THE Darkness yourself and protect the galaxy and light from being consumed (really hope so) and if that is true I really think this will allow Destiny’s lore and story line to really starts to drive the future of our favourite game in the right direction and give us all not just a fantastic and graphically rich game but also a storyline to dwarf all others.

The Future of Destiny is bright and possibly very rich with missions and story (and grind, grind, grind) but I for one would really like to see more of the past, where did this epic universe really start? is The Traveler an AI being or a god? was the Darkness always there or did something happen to create it? Is this a story of good and evil, right and wrong, cause and effect or is this like most wars a power struggle?

Which ever way we look at Destiny, Bungie has started a story like none we have ever seen that could possibly out shine any fantasy! I only ask you this: dont write off the story because its told in a different way to anything you are used to because we have only scratched the surface of what’s to come!!
